Peter Jennings’s Last Documentary

Here is Peter Jennings’s last documentary film on health insurance. It is a great view of the issues that we as a country are dealing with today and is central in the health care debate.

It is ironic that Peter Jennings was dying of cancer and in the midst of the health care system, he was so ill that he couldn’t even narrate this film but he did produce it and did the interviews.

Peter was a great journalist. I met him several times and he was a partner to us at AOL. I last saw him at the Republican Convention in NYC. He was always warm and cordial to me. He is missed. His documentary work was top notch and always well done.

Incredible. Great. Stunning.

Believe in what you do. This isn’t ironic to me. I believe in this. I really do.

Apple Products are great. And incredible. And stunning. And the people at Apple aren’t shy to tell everyone. It is a mantra. Group speak. Believe in what you do. Success begets more success.

I fall deeply in love with what I believe in - the Washington Capitals; Washington Mystics; SnagFilms; my filmmaking; Revolution Money; Clearspring Technologies; and the good old days at AOL as examples. I believe. I am a zealot. ”Incredible - great – stunning.” I am not afraid to say it. Go ahead and make fun but belief and love and passion rule the day.

A Week of Interesting Signs

This past week was the one year anniversary of several big economic meltdowns. A year ago our economy fell into free fall with analysts and media pundits crying, “The sky is falling! The great recession is here! Cash is king! The end is near!”

One year later - at least in the tech field - there are big signs of life. Google buys a company; Intuit buys a company; Adobe buys a company. There is $2.5 billion pumped back into companies.

I am hearing that bank financing is becoming available – at higher interest rates - but money is starting to flow back into the system. Stock prices for banks have rebounded. Check out the one year performance of Capital One and Fifth Third as examples.

Ugh. Thud. Same old, same old. We were up by 12 points at one point and lost by 9 points. We are young and Indiana is a vet laden team. They know how to close the deal and did they ever in the 4th period.

Enjoy this article on the game. We are gaining experience by playing against such a talented roster. We will continue to improve. Onward to next game in Indiana. It’s win or go home time now.

Could You Do It? Digital Detox!

Could you go for a long period of time without a computer and the Internet? And if you were a college student? What would happen to your academics and your social life?

Here is a wonderful new film that follows three college students as they try to disconnect. The results may surprise you. Consider this your weekend viewing free film special on your computer at SnagFilms.com.

Kevin Maney’s “Trade-Off”

There is a great new book out called Trade-Off: Why Some Things Catch On, and Others Don’t by author Kevin Maney. Kevin is a long time tech and media reporter and has worked at USA Today and Portfolio. He has written a Tipping Point-like book about quality vs. convenience. I just finished reading the book and all I can say is, “WOW!” It is smart; easy to digest; very helpful; and direct and to the point.

I am flattered that some of my concepts and ideas have influenced Kevin’s thinking. He even talks about AOL in the good old days and today’s Washington Capitals in this great tome.

Thank you Kevin. Logrolling in our time but I am being sincere. This is a terrific book. Get it now.

Sit In and Strike

I am in NYC at a ritzy hotel. I just checked in and the employees are all on strike chanting “Scab! Scab! Scab!” as a manager helped check me in at registration. About 300 employees are chanting and yelling ”Power to the people!” and they have blocked all entrances at the hotel.

The union leader has a megaphone. This is a scene right out of the 60′s. Instead of turning me off, I will come here all of the time. “Power to the people! Ride on! We shall overcome!” This is too cool.

By Design

We as a team have a lot of depth. We have lots of young players pushing veterans for playing time. Camp is very competitive. Goaltending is no exception as you will read in the Washington Post.

This is by design. As noted, our Hershey affiliate is a strategic asset for our franchise. We want and have developed a seamless system of training and developing young players to learn our system. When they play in Hershey, they are a part of our team. The players know they will get minutes in the NHL. They will get “their call” and they must be prepared when the time is right. They know we are watching how they do closely in Hershey so they play hard and get results for the Bears as well. They will have their opportunity to show what they can do in the NHL if they do well in the AHL. We believe in that fairness doctrine but at the same time we are loaded with young core players at the NHL level. Neuvirth helped Hershey win their championship last season and he is fighting for minutes still in the NHL. That is a great sign about how much depth we have at the NHL level, don’t you think?

Here is an article on the Washington Mystics first playoff game at Comcast Center at the University of Maryland. Several of our players – who excelled in college at U of MD – are very excited about this scheduling change. The game will also be on ESPN 2. I hope you will go with your family and watch this playoff opener.
