Stay Classy

Here is a great article in the Washington Post on the creation of fake Twitter accounts and the impersonation of team members.

The Internet has brought us some wonderful advancements and now some NOT SO wonderful things. This kind of identity theft will get someone into trouble - the fan or the player – and it is just a matter of time.

I know that once on the Capitals Insider blog someone starting to post comments in my name and they created quite a stir. Fortunately the Washington Post realized what was happening and pulled down the comments section. I don’t believe that they suspended the offending reader though. It is pretty easy on a blog or message board to impersonate someone else, isn’t it? I have had people impersonate my email address. Some go to the message boards on our website and post as me. Someone even tried to cash a check once in a local bank as me. That one floored me. It made me laugh and the individual was caught on security cameras. Can you believe that? Another time, someone called a radio station saying they were me and wanted to be interviewed – live – on air.

Facebook and Twitter are wonderful new communications vehicles but this kind of fake account posting is not what was intended. It is not good “netiquette” and shows little empathy to the player or our franchise.

I understand the draw of being funny, ironic and witty but at some point fun will turn into mischief and someone will get burned. It is just a matter of time.

I do support our players opening and managing their own accounts on Facebook and on Twitter. I am very active on both services and I enjoy the interaction. It is buyer beware time though now. It is very difficult now to identify the real person vs. the “fake” person so be careful what you read. Someone’s tweets may not be what you think. Thank you and stay classy.

They Blog So I Don’t Have To

It is amazing how many pixels are generated these days about the Washington Capitals.

This new feature in Japers’ Rink which provides easy navigation to the words and pictures centered on our franchise is terrific. It makes my day easy to start and generates click through for all.

The season hasn’t started yet but the blogosphere is a-humming. Thanks everyone.

Something On Which We Can Agree!

Kudos to President Sarkozy.

We need to stimulate our people’s happiness, contentment and self-actualization. Our Government is still too focused on “money for nothing”. Quality of life; hopes and dreams; and purpose are also needed to become balanced and happier as a nation and as a people.

We do need a call to arms for a better life. It isn’t just about money! Money doesn’t buy happiness. Take the poll within.

Vitamin A Saves Lives

Here is a wonderful film about a Johns Hopkins doctor who drove modern medicine techniques to save millions of lives. The film is narrated by Glenn Close and it is a wonderful example of “Filmanthropy”. These are the kinds of films we so enjoy bringing to you on SnagFilms.com. The world can be an ugly place and some folks work hard to make it better. Enjoy.

Mystics Go to Comcast Center for Playoff Game 1

Here is information on how to buy tickets for our first playoff game against the Fever this Thursday night. We are forced to play this game at the Comcast Center on the University of Maryland Campus. It should be a fun night with a loud crowd of college students and our season ticket holders. Come on out and support the team. These young women are role models and can really play hoops.

Wow – Jim Carroll Dies Too

This is getting sadder and sadder. When I was growing up in Brooklyn, Jim Carroll and The Basketball Diaries were all the rage. And his song, “People Who Died” was the soundtrack of our lives for one summer. He was deep into Brooklyn’s psyche; a hipster before it was hip; and a real hoopster, too. Here is an article about Jim on Spinner and the great song that inspired a film, too. RIP Jim.

Who is next?

We Lose Another Giant

Frank Batten Sr., founder of Landmark Communications here in Norfolk VA, passed away this weekend. He was a true innovator, gentleman and scholar. He made his fortune in print, TV and cable.

I had met him a number of times and always found him to be the epitome of class, southern hospitality and charm.

He also founded the Weather Channel and, in a happy coincidence, former AOL and TW exec Mike Kelly is now CEO of The Weather Channel. I am sure Mike will make Frank proud. RIP Mr. Batten. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Sweet – In the Playoffs

I am very proud of the Washington Mystics and the front office and our partner Sheila Johnson. I am very happy that our players seized their moment to shine and delivered in a huge way a big win last night.

We have qualified for the playoffs. Our first check mark delivered on our list to turn around the franchise. It may not have been pretty and we are essentially a 500 percent performing club but we are in the playoffs for the first time since 2006 and it feels good.

Thanks Mystics fans for being so supportive. Step 1 of our transformation is complete. Onward.
