I Said to My Wife

After we went up 3-2 last night after Backstrom’s second goal, ”Wow. We don’t deserve to win tonight.”

I was right. I was unhappy. But I was right.

We looked out of synch. We played “loosey goosey” hockey all across the board and the New York Rangers are a much improved team.

Early season games in the NHL are different than later season games. Everyone is playing with energy; defense hasn’t kicked in; and while talent will usually win out a team that plays hard and digs and wants it more can achieve really terrific results.

Look around the league.

Boston got crushed last night 6-1 by Anaheim.

Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia 5-4. The Flyers have let in 10 goals in 2 games against us and the Pens and this is after an off season of rebuilding their D and goaltending.

Phoenix beat the Pens though 3-0 the game before.

It is early in the season. We have a tough schedule. We didn’t play well last night. We got what we deserved. It is a highly competitive league and in the early season, everyone is in great shape and can win. We had better remember that. Respect everyone we play against and get back to work.

  1. The Caps overall talent level is overrated. They have some high end talent but after that it drops off dramatically, especially on defense. This team was not built well.

  2. Bruce said it well last night after the game that the more experienced defensemen are playing crappy. I was pretty dismayed that the defense was not upgraded in the off-season and we brought back the same corps of mediocre d-men. It doesn’t matter if we score 5 goals a game if we let in 6. This team isn’t going anywhere with this defense.

  3. You speak the truth Ted. While I’m bummed we lost last night I’m confident in the team: players, coaches, management and ownership.

Can you do me a favor? Coach up Dan Snyder on how to be a good owner. Thanks man.

  4. I think this team needs a lesson in applying ‘back pressure” and committing to playing equally as hard defensively as they do offensively. We may not have as many exciting games, but we’ll have discpline and a tough team to beat.

  5. ted–caught the game on center ice last nite…and your analysis is spot on…you really are becoming a hockey expert :)
