We Are Everywhere

So I am in Chicago for a set of board meetings. My meetings end at 6:00 pm central time last night. I dash to the ESPN Zone in downtown Chicago. I meet with a manager and convince him to put on the Caps vs. Thrashers game. I eat a burger. I get to watch a sloppy and ugly game with a beautiful ending in that we gain two standing points in the division on the road.

While I am watching the game, a business executive comes into the bar area and he is really into the game. He is cheering for the Caps. In between periods, I go over and introduce myself. His name is Jonathan Duke. He is from Sterling, VA. He is on a business trip and he wants to see “his favorite team” play.

How cool is that? We chat, take a photo together and watch the end of the game.

Go Caps! Rock the Red – everywhere.

  1. caps and the nhl always available here in los angeles at the redondo beach cafe…and cap fans do show up!

  2. Ted…You are hands down the best owner in professional sports….EVER. We are die hard Caps fans in our house as well as season ticket holders. Every year, it is money well spent. Thanks for giving the nation’s capital something to smile about instead of crying like that other sports team in this town whose owner, ahem, could take a page out of your book on how to run a team or more importantly on how to treat people. You are the best!

    ROCK THE RED!

  3. Ted,

My son and I (daughter as well ) are hugh caps fans we sit in front of you 2nd row, The really coolr thing is that you are in a bar watching the game. I think in todays society of sports owners, you are truley a class act and more owners should be like you.
Great team, thanks again for believing in DC and the CAPS

  4. A lot of proffessional analysts will indicate the performance of any team directly relates to the quality of ownership, and in the Caps case – they have the best ownership around. I can’t think of the last time I heard a story similiar to this, which is why the fans adore this franchise. Keep on rocking Ted!

  5. The only thing wrong with this story . . .when in Chicago you gotta eat something better then a burger :) It’s a great eating town!

  6. That’s fantastic…I would love to be at a bar/restaurant and then the best owner in the world comes over and we watch the game and more important, the win…

    Good times.
    Go Ted!

  7. Back in 2003 I was studying abroad in Brazil. It was during the playoffs and ESPN Brasil picked up the Caps/’Ning game. The announcers were clearly unfamiliar with hockey and with the Russian and Czech names. I started working on my homework just listening to the game in the background. At one point I thought to myself, “Bondra and Jagr have been on the ice for a while.” I looked up and it was someone else on the puck, but the announcers had given up calling any names other than Bondra, Jagr and Olie. Later in the game, they’re frustration reached the point where they stopped calling the game and just started singing to the tune of Only the Lonely, “Olie the Goalie.”
Clearly Brazil isn’t ready to Rock the Red just yet.

  8. How about Ovechkin’s slew foot last night wonder if the NHL will cover that up. He should get a three game suspension like Evgeny Artyukhin got.
