That was a fun game. It was an intense and physical game and a game where we stood up and were counted and where the music was playing in the locker room afterwards.
Two games against the Flyers and their vaunted and expensive and excellent defense and we have put up 9 goals. And we now have 3 of 4 points in two games. The Flyers are scary good. We ain’t so bad though either, eh?
I am very proud of Jose Theodore. I thought he was a true difference maker last night.
Thank you Caps fans for being loud and proud last night for a rainy weekday game. That was a lot of fun. We must get our power play back on track. We must defend short-handed better. We must bury more of our chances but we have now won five in a row. So take the two points and smile just a bit.
Some comments:
- I was shocked to see who I thought was a huge Caps fan - a season ticket holder of ours and someone who always wears red – wearing a Flyers jersey last night. He looked “conflicted” at the end of the game as his seatmates were laughing at him and explained to me his split allegiances. He is always a Caps fan until we play the Flyers.
- We were down 2-0 when I left the Owner’s box and sat with my friend Scott who once was homeless. We chatted and as we sat together the Caps scored twice to tie the game. Do you believe in karma? Way to go Scott!
- As I look at my email inbox today, I received six emails during the game when we were down 2-0 from some of our fans. Here are some of my favorites: “You can’t win with Jose in goal against a team like the Flyers.” (Jose was First Star of the game.) “Nick looks soft and scared. He is a baby playing against men out there.” (Backstrom had 4 points, a goal and 3 assists, and was Second Star of the game.) “The Flyers are bigger, tougher and edgier than you. They are exposing all of your weaknesses right now.” (We won 4-2. Thank you.)
Keep the faith. Enjoy the ride. TRY to be happy. Go Caps!
Ted,
That was one terrific game last night! We met some guys on the metro on the way to the game, their first game, what a great first game for them. As far as the comments you received during the game when we fell behind 2-0 some people aren’t happy unless they have something to complain about! As a season ticket holder can say this was the most exciting game so far at verizon, just shows the kind of hockey we are capable of playing!
GO CAPS!
I believe in karma.. Thanks, Ted. See you Sunday afternoon!
You’re the most transparent and honest owner of the four major organizations in this area. Don’t change. Don’t associate with the execs in Ashburn, either.
Teddy, As I watched the game last night I really got to witness Jose Theodore during one of his best games. Forty One (41) saves. What unbelievable talent! And by the way, don’t be looking at those E mails during the game unless of course it’s Coach Boudreau!! Rock the Red and Lets Go Caps!!
Another highlight. Very few Flyers fans in the stands! It used to be when we played the Flyers or Penguins it seemed as if there were as many of their fans as ours in the house. Not any more!!
Funny how you spotted a Caps fan turned Flyer fan for when we play them. We have a fellow STH in 404 that does the same thing except for the Red Wings. I find it disgusting personally.
Ted – What is your opinion on these “fans” that root for the caps at most games but switch allegiances when their real team comes to town? I have run into this a number of times. It seems like they expect us to be thankful that they are STHs (remember those days?).
For me, I just can’t accept that. You’re either support the team 100% or your not a real caps fan. Whats your position?
Ted,
Last nights game was amazing. I watched it live and watched it again on DVR. The first period was amazing and Jose played the best game that I have seen. You have truly created an amazing fan experience and as a long time fan I have seen you only work harder to improve the experience vs. abusing your fanbase to make money. You are the best and it shows in your players. I take my 6 & 8 year old to games and your fan experience is building life long fans. Eric Fehr tossed a practice puck after the warmup skate and my son was glowing. If you stepped on the ice everyone would throw their hats on the ice – Hat trick for you TED!!!!!
No need to try and be happy here. I love this team, warts and all. Thanks for your part in it Ted.
I was thrilled with the crowd – I harken back to the days when Caps fans were outnumbered by Flyer fans in the Cap Center & early MCI Center days. Last night was totally different, to say the least! I give you, Ted, all the credit in creating this great fan base.
Who emails during a game? The flow of a game is so emotional, things can swing quickly (like last night). I’ve been concerned that over the past series of games, the Caps were squeaking by teams they should have dominated. Last night was a good start to re-energizing. Now, how to get the other lines to contribute on the scoreboard? Aucoin is fun to watch, and he’s so small! It’s fun to see someone like that having success. Caps = high quality entertainment, both on and off the ice.
O…M…G!!!!! What is wrong with this people?!?!?!?!
Ted, with the prevelance of swine flu and other illnesses going around, is there any way that you could get the Verizon Center to put up hand sanitizer stations throughout the facility? With Quinin Laing being diagnosed with it and not wanting to expose the rest of the team, I think looking out for the fans should also be a concern. Thanks.
I was thinking the same thing — it felt like a playoff game, and a series against them might be better than that other Pennsylvania team. Thanks for posting the early comments — the team really proved itself last night.
Mr. Leonsis,
Our fans/friends do not realize every game is different. You could have the team full of allstars and they would still drop some games. I for one relish taking to the ice and enjoying the game in its purest form. Then when I watch the Capitals I know every game is a battle and no one playsdown to anothers level, lunacy to think that. Backstrom wasnt soft last night when he leveled Richards in front of their crease. People can be fickle about stuff in their life and lash out at others especially accessable major sports franchise owners. Keep it up, and excellent post.
Really like a playoff game: From media reports there were 11 NHL scouts (three from the St. Louis Blues) in the building, a Swedish television crew, and many of the fathers of the Flyers players, enjoying a mid-season father/son experience. The players took their dads to dinner Monday night, then the dads toured the White House Tuesday morning while their sons got ready for the game.
And yes, I was a little bummed when we were down two-zip. It’s amazing the difference a few goals make!
Boy, you get some real winners in your email box, don’t you. True enough that the Flyers exposed a few weaknesses … and we exposed more than a few of theirs, so I call that an even trade.
The other two plain and fancy have no clue what they’re talking about. o.0
Good win. I’ll take it. Suck it, Flyers … and haters disguised as Caps fans.
Ted, my husband was sick so I took a friend from Pittsburgh with me to last nights game. She’s never been to a pro game but says she’s a Pittsburg fan (maybe we can change that in the near future…). She buried her only son two months ago so it’s been a tough road for her lately. Last night’s game put a smile on her face, got her excited, had her screaming the chants with me, and let her step back from her pain for a few moments. Thanks boys. Well done.
