Comrades in Arms

Professional athletes like and respect one another. I think in DC more than other towns, too!

Many of our players have been embraced and visa versa by the Washington Wizards, DC United, Washington Nationals and Washington Redskins. They come to our games. We go to their games. They socialize together as well.

See this Skins blog post about Alex Ovechkin and his three point attempts on the field.

I also know that the coaches and GMs talk amongst themselves as well. There is deep mutual respect between teams and execs between sports. These players and execs are all brothers in arms. It is nice to see.

Remarkable Start and Stats

But it only matters if/when we win.Alex is not about personal stats. He is about helping the team win. It is why he is such a beloved teammate. He is focused on our singular goal. Personal accolades will come; stats will be generated; but wins are what are most important.

Right now I would have to believe that the Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin line may be the best line in the NHL. I think they generated 8 points against Philadelphia and would have had more if we weren’t killing off so many Philly power plays.

What should we call this line? What are your ideas?

Debit Instead of Credit Cards

Here is a terrific article about a new trend in consumer spending habits. It focuses on the convenience of use of debit cards vs. high interest credit cards.

This augers well for us at Revolution Money. We have built a next generation payments platform and one that combines online and offline. You can connect your checking account to the piece of plastic.

The card - Revolution Card - is a credit card. It is also a debit card. And it is an ATM card. And it can connect to your online PayPal-like account from us. All in one.

It works like a debit card in that it is PIN based. Because it is PIN based, it is safe and secure. It doesn’t have an account number on it. It doesn’t have your name on it. It doesn’t have your signature on it.

Debit is a big part of the payments future. Being able to load your dollars from your online account into your personal account and pay for products and services from your prepaid or debit account is going to be massively important to consumers.

There Goes the Dynasty :-)

It was an epic and fun game last night.

We get a point. We have points in our first three games with five of six available points.

We live and we learn.

We end our streak of playing in Opening Night games on the road as well against great teams a la Boston and Philly. Thankfully. That isn’t a lot of fun. Trust me.

We took too many penalties or too many penalties were called. The refs can’t become such a big part of the night. Six penalties in one period and more penalty killing time than playing 5 on 5 time means that our best offensive players aren’t on the ice either. The refs played the best D against our best lines last night!

Jinxed

We are now officially “jinxed”.

These posts are so well written and so nice but exactly the wrong things to think at the wrong time. Read them here.

We play Philly, Detroit and San Jose plus the Rangers and the Devils in a ten day period.

We could be 2-5 in 15 days of the first month of the season. We wouldn’t look like a great team. The media will be writing “What is wrong with the Capitals?”

Signing Alex to a long term extension was a great sign of our progress as a franchise and having depth and lots of scoring options is yet another sign of our development. But potential is just potential until you reach your goals.

I don’t compare us to any great Stanley Cup winning team. We haven’t won anything yet. Don’t jinx us. We can’t read this stuff. We have to be honest with ourselves. We have only won a division championship twice as a unit. We have won one playoff series in ten years. We have miles to go before we sleep. We ain’t that good. I am not just saying that to be humble. We haven’t done anything yet. I don’t want us to be set up for a letdown or to think we are better than we are. Thanks for the great writing here but calm down. :-)

Allow Me To Gloat One More Time

IMDB just updated its awards section on Nanking as a film. I received an alert via email.

Nanking was nominated for 10 awards and won 5 awards including a “Best Of” at Sundance; a Peabody Award; an Emmy Award; a Humanitarian Award; and Best Documentary Award as well.

Not bad for my first foray into filmmaking. I am so honored. See this list. Thank you to our directors; writers; producers; actors and everyone involved in this project.
