Lives of Stars

Monday, November 30th, 2009

No - not celebrities - stars in our galaxies, Carl Sagan-like stars as described in Cosmos.

What a wonderful and educational series. “Billions and billions and billions of stars.” :-)

SnagFilms.com now has this seminal body of work up on its site. I have enjoyed watching these episodes. I saw many of them as a young adult and was mesmerized.

Carl Sagan was “the man” and he made science cool and fun for a generation.

Watch this one. It is a famous episode on black holes and supernovas. The Lives of Stars. Click here and be enlightened.

Takes All Kinds

Monday, November 30th, 2009

David Steckel is a very valuable member of our team. He is a big game player; a great teammate; and a big strong center that also plays wing. He is great on face offs and on penalty kills. He shuts other players down on defense. He is also a leader and is very poised on the ice in crucial moments.

A team needs component parts to excel in all the areas of the game to be successful. We know and understand that fact. Stats can be misleading.

Whether David has scored a goal or not this season is not that important. He is vital to our team and to his teammates. We win as a team and we lose as a team.

We respect his game. We value him. He is important to us, his teammates and to the fan base.

David will score goals but he needs to know he is respected and embraced and that we appreciate what he does for our team when he isn’t scoring goals.

I am very grateful to him for his contributions to our team. This article doesn’t do justice to his contributions. He is trusted by our coach and by his teammates. My bet is that he will win many games for us in this season and in the playoffs with big time goals and his overall quality of play. Go Caps!

We are building something important together here.

OK, OK - We Get It :-)

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Two points garnered is no longer good enough in a game. First place in the East is not good enough. Second most points in the NHL is not good enough.

We need to win the Stanley Cup like right now. Tonight. Sweep all 16 games. Right now. Until you do, you are a bum.

And we need to be undefeated in the regular season to boot.

I appreciated getting some of your emails at 9:30ish last night saying how we lost to Montreal and we aren’t a very good team. We are lazy. We have no heart. Thank you. A very courageous game analysis.

However, I am proud of the way the team rallied last night on the road. I am proud that we tied the game after having a 2-0 lead. I am proud that we won in the shootout and we get two points. Did you know that the Capitals have the least amount of regulation losses this season to date in the entire NHL? We have only lost five games in regulation. Imagine if we could win a few more shootouts or games in OT?

It was Thanksgiving weekend. We played two games and we get four points. We are still banged up as a team and it shows. But we are fighting through it.

I have perspective. We got every point available to us this weekend. Lots of players are chipping in and we are getting wonderful goaltending.

I am grateful. All we can do is get the points made available.

This honestly isn’t the Olympics. You don’t get style points. You are what your record says you are. Yes - we can play better. Yes - we aren’t a great team, yet. Yes - we aren’t playing playoff like hockey. We get it. We honestly do.

But have a little perspective. We won on the road. Try to enjoy the ride. And next time you want to send an email rant, at least wait until the game has ended. :-) Too funny. Have some faith. Thank you. Go Caps!

Up and At ‘Em

Friday, November 27th, 2009

I was up at 4:45 am as I am returning for the day from a family vacation in Florida to attend the funeral of Mr. Pollin.

The press and public reaction to this great man’s passing has been nothing short of phenomenal. Mr. Pollin was a beloved figure in DC and I typed in his name into Google news today and saw a whopping 1,146 articles about him and his life and times since Wednesday.

He was that important of a figure and that great of a man.

I apologize to all media that have asked to interview me. I have declined every single interview to date. We have only sent out one formal statement and I wrote one short op-ed piece in the Washington Post. I did not think it was respectful to Mr. Pollin’s memory to go out and do press interviews and if I did one, then I would have to do them all.

I lost my father a couple of years ago. I empathize with the pain of that kind of loss. There is an appropriate time for everyone to mourn and grieve. I appreciate you understanding and for showing respect and decorum.

Life Goes On - On Being Grateful and Thankful

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

We have much to be thankful for and our loved ones deserve to know it.

I am an only child. Both my mom and dad have passed on.

My wife, two children, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law and family are my immediate family. My wife’s dad has also passed on.

At times like this and on Thanksgiving Day it is so important to cherish family memories and to take stock in all we have and all we are grateful for in this rough and tumble world we live in.

I am very grateful for the love of my family; the friendships I have; and the love and respect of my partners.

I am for our collective health and well being.

I am grateful to our community for all of their support in all of our efforts together.

I am grateful that the economy seems to be improving albeit slowly. This positive movement should help so many of our neighbors who have been struggling of late.

I am grateful to all of the folks who work with me in my companies and charitable efforts. I hope we are making you proud to come to work every day.

President Obama Statement on Mr. Pollin

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

The White House just released the following statement. Truly an amazing testament to the legacy of Mr. Pollin.
President Barack Obama

Statement on the Death of Abe Pollin

November 25, 2009

Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Abe Pollin - a giant in the world of professional sports and someone I was proud to call a friend. Abe was a man who knew that being an owner wasn’t just about winning championships, although his teams had plenty of success. It was about helping young athletes become good people as well as good players. And it was about being part of a community. Abe believed in Washington, D.C. when many others didn’t - putting his own fortune on the line to help revitalize the city he loved. He was committed to the teams he guided, generous to those who needed it most, and as loyal to the people of D.C. as they were to him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Irene, his sons Robert and James, and the entire Pollin family.

-Barack Obama

Remembering Abe

There are very heartfelt words from me and everyone else in our community regarding his life and times.
