Not How You Start but How You Finish

It is a goal of the team to finish with the most points in the NHL. That is an admirable goal. We have never completed that feat.

It is a goal to win the division title, back to back to back. That too is admirable. And hopefully doable?

If we were to do all of the above, it would represent “firsts” in our team’s history. Check out this blog post within.

Our coaches and our GM and staff use goals to motivate the team and help to reinforce a winning culture. Culture is important. Having expectations is important. We believe in that fact.

However, we also know that it is highly unusual for the team that has the best record in the NHL to go on and win the Stanley Cup.

The regular season and the playoff season are totally different. We know that and we believe that. It is also why at trade deadline time, teams make moves to get ready for the playoffs. And then you hope that the moves don’t change culture or chemistry and knock you off your winning ways.

It is a delicate balance. We know that as a fact.

Born into Blood

Dexter concluded its season last night and I had to note that I called the ending about a month ago. I told my wife that the “cycle always repeats. Rita is history. Dexter’s son got a dark passenger.”

I don’t think Trinity killed Rita though. He didn’t gloat about it on the table, did he? Time will tell.

This is such a great series, my favorite on television. I was glued to the set watching this series unfold all season.

My childhood friend, James Manos Jr., created this series for TV. I guess Brooklyn drives imagination in many different ways.

John Lithgow was wonderful. What a creepy and perfect serial killer. My bet is that he will win an Emmy for this set of performances. Watch the series online or buy the DVD set when it is available. Dexter is worthwhile television.

As another aside, we went to see Invictus this weekend as well. I give it 3 stars. It is a worthwhile film with very restrained performances by Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman. You could tell it was a Clint Eastwood film, very efficient and very tight. I wanted more but we enjoyed the film and I would recommend it to my friends.

Meh

Yuck. It happens.

A collapse.

We get a lead. We lose it. We tie it up. We lose that momentum too.

Maybe we were tired. Maybe we were rattled with the change in routine. Maybe our defense broke down. Maybe our young goaltender had a truly sub par performance. Maybe their goaltender stole a game after a shaky start.

Maybe all teams in the NHL are good to very good and they just beat us - at home – after we played back to back. It is a big game for the other side, Hockey Night in Canada and all. I think we lead the NHL now in Saturday night games on Hockey Night in Canada now. Everyone gets up for us. We have no easy games to play any more.

Unleash the Fury

Our coach gives the fans and their reaction to “Unleash the Fury” played in the second period credit for the win. He gives our head of game day presentation a primary assist.

My son gives Mark Rivera, my childhood friend who played the National Anthem on sax, credit because as he said, “Have you ever heard our fans sing the national anthem before at a game? That was amazing dad.” I do agree that hearing our fans sing was a wonderful moment. Do you think we could sing at every game? That is such a great and nice and authentic touch for our nations’ capital.

Mark Rivera is a cool guy. He is Ringo Starr’s musical director and has played with him on tour. He has played with John Lennon and Paul McCartney. He has been in the Billy Joel band for more than 20 years. More importantly, he is 3-0 playing the National Anthem at Caps games. He and I grew up together in Brooklyn.

The announcers give Mike Green credit for the win and credit for keeping the game interesting. Some give Alexander Semin credit for his sublime play and some say Nicklas Backstrom won the game with his playmaking.

Our beat reporter says our goaltender was “unremarkable” but he gets the win. Others credit astronaut man for the win.

Whatever it takes, we got the win. And two points. And we remain in first place in the NHL in terms of points and goals scored.

We can and will play better. We now seem to be almost healthy as a team. Thanks Caps fans. I give you the game puck. You were awesome last night! Go Caps!

I Voted and You Should Too

Fans are voting for the best local players for the last decade on Washingtonpost.com. It is wonderful to see that Ovechkin, Kolzig and Bondra are ranked in the Top 6 with Alex leading all local athletes as the athlete of the decade in Washington, DC. If you have a chance, please review the list and let your voice be heard.

Here is the link to vote.

In an ironic twist, I voted for Ovechkin as best athlete and Jagr as biggest bust for a local athlete. Here is that list to vote on as well.

So what does that say about me? :-)  I am so confused…

Celebrate Hockey – Pond Hockey!

Here it is, a great documentary film about hockey the way it is meant to be played - outdoors on a pond.

You will so enjoy this film. Watch it. Drink a hot cocoa and think and act like a kid.

This is a wonderful film. Get ready for the Winter Classic game on New Year’s Day. Watch this film and share it.

Here is an open invite to all hockey bloggers. Snag this film, embed it and show it to your friends.

Enjoy courtesy of SnagFilms.com. Watch by clicking here.

Aol Stock Symbol

And here you go; aol is being publicly traded again under the symbol of aol. It opened at $23.67. It feels good to type that symbol into my portfolio tracker again.

The company has no excuses now. It is independent of Time Warner. It can do the right things the right way. It can be totally and maniacally focused on doing what is best for its consumers and partners and employees. I wish it well. I think it has a shot to be reestablished as a major company and brand in the digital world. It has a good strategy. It has terrific people. It has cash flow. It now needs to execute with a “no excuses” mantra: Go – Go fast – Grow fast. Revel in the focus and being able to manage to Main Street and not to Time Warner Center. There are now hundreds of millions of consumers using your services and tens of thousands of advertisers that use the platform. Focus on them. Use that stock currency to acquire great and innovative new web companies to become even more relevant and add even more innovative and driven management. Show everyone what you are made of now!

And Time Warner is free of this Internet thing on the side. It can be what it wants to be too - a content company – free of distribution via its spin out of cable and now aol.

It can focus on what to do with its print based properties and its branded networks that really repackage other people’s content. This will be a challenge as well. We all will be watching as Oscar Wilde once said, “The two great tragedies in life are NOT getting what you want and GETTING what you want.”

Congratulations to the people of aol. Make us proud.

Hockey’s Dream Series

Nice to see Time Magazine mention the Caps vs. Pens series last season as one of its Top 10 sports moments. We won the game; we lost the series; and the Pens went on to win the Cup deservedly so. Check out this article.

Those playoff games seem so far away. So long ago.

We are in the midst of reinvention, a new season and a long road trip. More injuries are piling up. Yuck.We got done to us last night what we did to Tampa on Monday night. We were shut out. We didn’t take advantage of our opportunities to score and their goaltender was on top of his game and was the difference maker. Buffalo was the better team last night. Our six game winning streak is over. Back to work. See you all Friday night at home against Carolina. You can’t win them all. Sorry about that.
