Paperless? I Don’t Think So

I thought we lived in a paperless world? I thought the digital revolution would do away with our need for pulp.

Yikes! Americans use the most amount of paper. We are cutting down forests; using clean water; and releasing methane into the air. Yuck.

Here is a very straightforward, fact-filled film. It is six minutes in length called The Secret Life of Paper. I found it very powerful and smart. Click here to learn what you can do as a consumer to create change.

  1. Good afternoon, Ted.

I greatly admire your passion for Washington sports and all that you have done to contribute to the DC-area sports scene. I’ve even thought of sending you my resume in hopes of being able to help you transform sports in our area.

However (you had to know that the “however” was coming), I must disagree with you when it comes to the use and production of paper products. Ever notice how many dumpsters are filled with paper-based products following a sports event? Aren’t the game programs, food trays, food wrappers, pizza boxes, and popcorn tubs prevalent at all sporting events still made from byproducts of trees? I guess it’s possible that today’s fans are ready to purchase game programs via a secure Bluetooth download to their phone/PDA via a data kiosk in the arena. I haven’t quite figured out the digitization of the popcorn tub, yet.
Trees are our planet’s most abundant, most renewable, resource. As the world is not all ones and zeroes, I’m certain there are at least a few U.S. loggers and pulp manufacturers that would like to see more renewable trees used here in the States rather than overseas.

Did you know that within the contiguous 48 states, we added over 16 billion cubic feet of net new growth to our domestic forestlands in the year 2008? (see USDA Forest Service FIA Standard Reports) If this were “back in the day” that would be a lot of Sherwoods!

Thank you for being so accessible and please keep up the great work with DC sports.

    Very Best Regards,

    Jim

PS: Great comeback by the Caps over the Panthers last night!

  2. Back in the 80′s when I sold office furniture, my largest sale was to an organization that was claiming that with their new IT system they would soon be paperless. They purchased 72 five drawer lateral files. :-) I don’t think things have much changed since then.
