How Many Times Has The Shoe Been On The Other Foot?

Detroit played a great game last night. They were in a groove; played their system; and took it to us. At one point in the first period, I looked at the scoreboard and it said 15 shots vs. 2 shots and the score was tied 0-0.

Jose Theodore was stellar. He played with great confidence. He stole that game for us. Kudos. Atta boy. Way to go.

We won over a very dangerous Detroit team 3-2. It was a game that I thought we didn’t deserve to win. But we have reached that point now in our development. We don’t play as well as our capabilities and we can still beat a fantastic opponent. Everyone chips in and we get the two points. We have beaten Philly and Detroit back to back and now we go play Pittsburgh. I don’t ever remember a more competitive three game stretch since we bought the team 11 years ago.

Our fourth line was just awesome. Bradley and Steckel played the game with playoff-like intensity.

But it was our goaltending that was the highlight of the game. Jose Theodore played lights out.

He truly stole the win for us. Thank you. Go Caps!

We now have 68 points - first in the East and third in the NHL.

  1. “shoe on the other foot” is right. The win over the Wings was a huge step forward: the Caps found a way to win a game they had no business being in after the first period. Old timers will remember how the Isles and Canadiens teams would do this to the Caps in the early 80s: Caps outshoot and outplay them and lose 3-1. It takes 16 playoff wins to get a Cup and along the way Cup-winners have to steal a couple.

  2. There is a Graphic for Theo, but people get confused when they see it.. it’s
The-O. It took me a while the first time I saw it to realize what it was supposed to be, vs. what it comes across as..

  3. hey jonathan..how’s about the fans doing a chant on their own…no stupid prompting from someone using a keyboard

  4. Jose wasn’t just standing on his head all night–he was standing on his head and juggling live chainsaws upside down all night. That was NUTS.

Any truth to the rumor that Mike Babcock went to the DC police after the game and tried to get Jose arrested for Grand Theft, Hockey Game?

I agree with Jonathan, by the way–if Jose doesn’t have a chant video, he should. Especially if he keeps playing like that.

  5. I am from Montreal and probably Jose’s number one fan…following him from MTL to Denver to Washington. Jose was absolutely incredible!!!!!! And having witnessed first hand his heroics in 01-02 this definitely looked like the Theo I know and love. I hope his great play continues and that I wont be disappointed when I come to Washington again this year for the playoffs!!

  6. Make it a highly competitive four-game stretch. Phoenix on Saturday is nothing to sneeze at. They are a great story in the West that few are paying attention to.

  7. yes.. it would nice to have the Theo slide on the screen… it bugs me he doesn’t get it. I really have been cheering for him this year.

I want to say a special thanks to Backstrom and double thanks to Eric Fehr. We had some very, um, excited and LOUD fans behind us at warm-ups. THANK YOU guys for giving them pucks so I didn’t go deaf. It was great when Nick skated over and gave the twenty somethings the puck, and even nicer when Eric gave both those younger kids a puck each. They were going to lose their voice yelling! Besides my hearing escaping unscathed:), you made those little guys really excited. We saw them later sitting a row below us and they clutched those pucks the whole game!

  8. Truly a great game to have been at, once again the best live sports entertainment experience available in the DC Metro. Finally soooo true Theo was an absolute joy to watch last evening.
    LETS GO CAPS!!!!!!!

  9. Incredible performance from Theo! But I need to bring up something about the in-game entertainment. If Varly had been in net and made some of those saves, we would have seen the “Var-ly Var-ly” chant on the screen. I’ve never seen any sort of thing for Theo. Is there even one made up for him? I know Kolzig and Johnson had them. I think even Huet had one for his brief stint here. Theo isn’t always the goalie we want him to be, but let’s make sure we give him proper treatment when he is!

  10. It was awesome to see Jose Theodore play like a Vezina and Hart winner! I daresay that was a better game for him than the shutout he had against the Canadiens last season.

Hopefully, the confidence boost he had to get from that game keeps him going strong.

And, you’re right. How many times has the shoe been on the other foot? I remember the Capitals shooting 45+ times on Niittymaki in Philadelphia, and only getting 1 goal out of the effort, while the Flyers nailed home seven. It’s about time a game like that went in Washington’s favor!

  11. That was a time capsule game. I think I said “that should have been a goal” about ten times. Great effort for the win. Thanks Jose.

  12. Great teams find ways to win when they aren’t playing their best while bad teams find ways to lose when they are playing their best.

Sure, winning 6-1 in an all out romp is fun, but being able to pull out a 3-2 W over Detroit without your A game is arguably an outstanding accomplishment.
