Boffo Ratings Last Night Locally
Comcast SportsNet pulled big numbers last night for the Capitals vs. Penguins game. We were rated at a 3.3 household rating with a 6.5 rating with men in the 25 to 54 age range.
Kudos all around. Go Caps!
Jim Irsay is Cooler Than Me
There is a wonderful article on Jim Irsay, owner of the Colts, in this week’s issue of Sports Illustrated. The article was written by L. Jon Wertheim.
You should all read it. He is a great owner. He is a cool guy, a great dad and really connects with people.
His team is ultra successful and he has a great life and great taste. He made Indy love football maybe more than basketball! I feel and hope we are kindred-like spirits.
We are tangentially connected in an odd offbeat way. My family has a connection with the writer Jack Kerouac. His manuscript of the On The Road scroll went to auction back in 2001. I decided to bid on it and buy it. It meant a lot to me and people close to me. On the Road is one of my favorite books. Jack Kerouac also happens to be buried near my mom and dad in a cemetery in Lowell, Mass. I would have kept it for awhile in my home and then donated it to Georgetown University. That was the plan.
I had never done anything like this before so I called the auction house and they had to pre-approve me to bid. I asked how much was the highest price ever paid for a manuscript and was told $600k. I asked what should I get pre-approved for and they said “$2 million.” Thus, once approved, I was ready to go.
Two folks who work for my family went to NYC to bid while I was on the phone. The bidding opened at $100k and went up to $1 million in about three minutes and I had yet to bid.
When it hit $1 .1 million, the auctioneer said, “Fair warning.” There was one person left standing. I spoke into the phone to my associates, “Go for it now - $1.2 million.”
It then went to $1.3. I bid $1.4. He bid $1.5. I went $1.6. He said $1.7. I went $1.8. He said $1.9. I said $ 2.0 million. He said $2.1 million. I couldn’t bid anymore. I heard “fair warning – fair warning – fair warning! Sold!” And then there were cheers.
Pledging Fraternities – That Time of Year
Students are back at school; going to parties on campus; and pledging fraternities. Have fun but be safe.
Here is a film served up as a public service that offers a tutorial on the dangers of alcohol poisoning amongst young adults.
Drinking games can and do kill – almost 2,000 young adults per year.
This is a very personal and moving film. Watch it if you are a student or a parent with a young adult in school. It is quite “sobering.” It isn’t funny. Drinking in excess can kill you. Off the soapbox. Click here to watch this film.
3 in 5
We beat the Penguins last night 6-3. It was only the first of four games we will play against them this season. We shouldn’t get too excited. But good for us. It was a fun game.
We played well. We can score a lot of goals. We are a better team than last season.
This was a tough week. We beat Philly. We beat Detroit and we beat Pittsburgh. We beat three rivals in five days. That stretch showed how mentally and emotionally tough and developed we have become. It is really difficult to “get up” for so many big and tough games in a row.
Fifty games played – 70 points garnered – 191 goals scored to date.
We are a work in progress.
This may be the best Caps team – in the regular season - in our history. We are having our best year at the gate and off the ice.
But we want to be the best team in our history and we all know what we have to do to prove that out.
Hence, I am proud of the team and of our fan base but warn everyone that we should not get hyper excited. We are focused on one goal. We have work to do. It is still early.
We are allowed to enjoy the journey though. We are given permission to be happy moment by moment so kick back and smile. We can start to worry about a letdown for Saturday’s game later tonight. Until then – Go Caps! Thank you.
