I actually had a fan come up to me near the owner’s box after the game and shout about how disappointed he was in us that we didn’t score five goals so he could get his free wings. He demanded a refund and said we were mailing it in and that 4-1 wins were unacceptable and that unless we got our act together we should consider firing George and Bruce and that I should consider selling the team as I wasn’t committed.
He was kidding. I think?
Last night was another game and another big win over a divisional opponent in front of another red clad sellout crowd and 42 straight sellouts. I guess the league won’t be contracting the Washington Capitals, eh?
Who said that again? Thanks Caps fans. You have become one of the top, most committed fan bases in the entire NHL!
We are first in the East; first in our division; and tied with Chicago for second most points in NHL. We are also one point behind the league leader in points, San Jose.
We have far outscored every team in the league with 211 goals.
But we have now only let in 147 goals against. That is less goals than many D oriented teams and teams that many experts said were best positioned for great success because of their D and goaltending, teams such as the Flyers, the Rangers, the Wild; the Ducks; and - yes - we have let in less goals against than even the Penguins.
Our D is playing well but it is our goaltending that has been quite strong. Who has a stronger set and pipeline of goaltenders than us again? Just saying…
Tell me again why our D and our goaltending get ridiculed? I mean, I would hate to let facts ever get in the way of opinions. And our young corps of D and goaltenders has upside, too.
Oh yeah, we won our 9th in a row. We are now 20-3-3 at home, the best home record in the NHL. We have the best power play in the NHL, too, ranked #1.
Enjoy the ride. We want it to last but it can’t last forever. It feels good to see so many smiling faces out there. Thank you again. Go Caps!
Andrew K,
I’m not here to troll. Just because I root for the Pens does not mean I despise the Caps. The team I despise happens to be from Philly
In fact, I used to live in the DC area and probably took in over 50 games there when the stands were half full. I have a full appreciation for hockey and some of my favorites in the NHL happened to be Caps, i.e. Iafrate, Hunter, Ciccarelli, et al. Backstrom, Ovechkin, and Laich are my current favorite Caps players.
More importantly, I respect the owner of your team and think this site is fantastic.
This long winning streak would be a big deal …… except that at the same time Ottawa is at 9 and counting, Vancouver is at 7 and counting. All of a sudden it seems that long winning streaks are growing on trees. If maintaining a long streak like this is as hard as Bruce says it is, the NHL must be developing a bunch of very diligent hockey players all of a sudden.
PensFan: Spare us the patronizing comments; why do Pens fans insist on trolling the websites of other teams? Stick to your own websites.
Some say if we call our offense our defense and our defense our offense, we can really confuse ‘em … at least that’s what the coach on the NHL Network pieces was trying to get across …
The team that scores the most wins … can we do it in the playoffs? I’m betting we can. We nearly beat Pittsburgh without any significant contribution from Green and Semin last season while they were firing on all cylinders. Tell me …
Go Caps !! 10 in a row today!
I got tickets for me and my 4 year old son for the March 28th game vs Calgary. It will be his first Caps game live in person. I’m introducing him the game slowly and we watch on TV when they are on. He loves the goal siren at Verizon Center and the Caps haven’t disappointed him there as he’s heard it a lot lately. He’s got his red Ovechkin jersey and his Caps hat. The wait until this game time is driving him crazy though. Let’s go Caps!!!
As much as I love the current streak, I hope it doesn’t get too much air. I’m happy that we are not unbeaten against our division, and I’m happy that Tampa beat us to kill that streak. I am happy that, based upon how the Hart Trophy is designed (most valuable to a team), Ovechkin doesn’t deserve it (teams too solid). I’d love to see Green get the Norris, but there is only one trophy I want this team to win, and, I think, they want the same one.
Ted, Thank you so much. Thank you for being such an honest owner. Thank you for being such a good owner. Let’s go Caps.
Did Don Cherry say years ago the Caps should be contracted?
Ted,
If your fans have any of those pacifiers left over from taunting Crosby, I’m sure they can go to good use for a particular fan by dipping them in his favorite wing sauce.
Congrats again on another win, Caps. We envy your Power Play. Best I’ve seen in a LONG time in the NHL.
Any comments about the grossly unfair suspension of #52? Or, did you check your First Amendments at the door as well when you became an NHL owner?
This is a tremendous run the Capitals are on–nota bene, I refuse to jinx it by using past perfect tense–and we’ve gotten a little bit spoiled. I think we fans may have gotten a bit too used to blowing the other team out by video-game scores at this point. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see the Caps keep doing what they’ve been doing from now until June, but it’s not the end of the world if they don’t. That said, no loss is exactly a welcome loss, but they go with the game.
While I’m on losses–what’s the skinny on Mike Green? Green gets a deuce for elbowing, the guy he hits barely misses a shift, and Green gets a three-game suspension. Same game, Green gets kneed, they’re scraping him off the ice, he misses the game, no suspension for the other guy, and we end up in the sin bin to boot.
Who let Vince McMahon into the NHL offices this morning?!
Well, if the rest of the NHL teams can’t deal with the Capitals very well at the present time, the NHL front office will …….
Interesting that in his comments today, Greenie said that he had no issues with the Stillman check that supposedly “started everything”. He said it was a clean hit.
Ted,
We just got back from cashing in our tickets for the 5th time this year at Glory Days. We told the waiter that we had never been to one of their restaurants until this promotion and that we hoped it was bringing them some new business. He said that last night, the staff at his restaurant were actually counting down the game and hoping the Caps wouldn’t score a 5th goal because many fans just get the wings and something low-cost, and leave a very small tip.
Come on, Caps fans. Don’t stiff the waitstaff! Most are Caps fans, and we don’t want them rooting against us…
Let’s go CAPS!
I am so excited how great this team is playing but you will not hear the end of criticism until the Caps win in all. The playoff’s are an entirely different animal. Beat the Pens and get deep in the playoff’s without having to go 7 games each series. That will shut up the people bashing on the defense and goal tending. Until then though enjoy these awesome games and a playoff like crowd to go with them. I have been watching the Caps since the early 80′s and waited my entire life to see crowds like this. I cannot thank you enough. They are as loud as the first cup final game back in ’98.
I am sure that guy yelling at you was kidding. Either that or he was just insane! hah
The old arena used to have a sound meter. I would love to see how that would read now.
I dunno! Kidding? If those bums can’t score five, the least you could do is meet me for dinner. The wings are on you, of course! Outrageous! Go Caps!!!
Hahaha. Honestly, Ted, I often refer to the talking heads and pundits as the “chatterati” for a reason.
You know as well as I do that negativity sells and draws eyeballs. So, they need to write about the Caps because that’s what a lot of people want to read. But, they need to find something negative to say about them, because that creates controversy and draws eyes. Offense is right out, because the Caps are icing a terrifying offensive attack right now. But, if you have offense, D and G muts be suspect, right? And last year the D and goaltending did have problems. With no personnel changes, why not target it? It’s the only open option to say something negative.
If you’ll notice, many of the people who are saying this are either clueless (ESPN) or biased (THN). Remember that the Canadian media is very, very nervous about Vancouver. They’re scared they’re going to lose. By knocking the Caps’ D and goaltending over and over again, they can continue to justify to themselves the exclusion of Mike Green from Team Canada and reassure themselves that they have the best team they can ice. I feel bad for them being so scared
Honestly? I think there’s a number of people in the league offices who really, really don’t like the Caps as they are now. Why? Nationalism. The Caps are the worst nightmare of an old-school Canadian hockey guy. A Russian has the nerve to be the equal or better of Canada’s golden child and leads a multinational squad that plays an up-tempo, exciting game in an expansion market and has the nerve to be good at it.
Ted,
I love going to the games, and have for a long time. STH since 2001:-) Tickets are worth every $$.
I loved reading about how the players enjoy when we start chanting “We Want Wings” . There are 3 more home games until the Olympic Break. Perhaps the team can get us another one by then. LOL.
angel:-)
I know my game attendance has doubled my best year. Go Caps!
It’s nice to see the success but let’s not forget, as Bruce has said, that we don’t want to be peaking now. We want to be peaking in June. Usually, the team that wins the cup has a slump late in the season and rebounds to play great hockey in the playoffs. I hope our great hockey isn’t now with our slump coming in the playoffs. I think the Caps are in great position now because all this winning now will lead to overconfidence. We will have our slump late in the regular season and Bruce will have ammo to fire up the guys during the playoffs.
