Ups and Downs

After a week like we just concluded, I think everyone on the team is “up.” Check out Japers’ take on the team here.

We now play 11 more games up to the Olympic break. Basically we are playing every other day in this compressed season because of the Olympics. When we return from break, there will only be 20 games left in the regular season. We are at a breakneck pace. We are sprinting to the playoffs and second season now.

I would like to thank everyone who attended and supported us last night at the Caps Care Casino Night. It was so much fun seeing everyone dressed up and looking chic. The games were a lot of fun. The food stations were fantastic and we raised a lot of money for charities last night. The players were wonderful to mingle and have so much fun with our fans, too. I am very appreciative. Here is a link to a photo slide show from last night’s event. See what you missed if you didn’t attend. Go Caps!

Mind-blowing Numbers

I guess the Internet isn’t a fad.

Check out these latest numbers. Click here for startling facts and figures.

The most mind blowing? There are now more than 1.7 billion people using the Internet around the world and less than 200 million in the US.

I remember when there were less than 1 million people on the Internet and we all connected at 1200 baud.

Spam would seem to be the #1 issue on the net today. Ugh!

Andrew Jarecki Does It Again

Andrew Jarecki produced a new documentary called Catfish which premiered to great reviews at the Sundance Film Festival. Ironically on my Facebook newsfeed this morning there was a review - a glowingly positive one - from a friend who saw the film at Sundance. Considering the film is based on virtual friendships, I thought you would enjoy this review from Variety.

Andrew produced and directed Capturing the Friedmans; was founder of Moviefone; and has just completed his first full length feature film which I will discuss at another time.

Welcome back Andrew. Way to go!

The Week That Was…

Six days – four wins - 18 goals for – 10 goals against – three games at home – all sell outs. Real sell outs.

We won against the Flyers, the Red Wings, the Penguins and the Coyotes.

Alex Semin is having a nice little run since Alex Ovechkin was named Captain. The team is on a nice little run since Alex was named Captain.

We are killing off power plays quite efficiently.

We are scoring on special teams now, too. I think we remain first in the NHL. No team wants to not play “smart hockey” and put us on the power play. The puck will end up in the back of their net.

And on day 7 - tonight, Sunday - we party and raise monies for local charities at Caps Care Casino Night.

This was a full week - a tough week - and perhaps the best regular season week in the club’s history certainly in the last 11 years since we acquired the franchise.

We now have 72 points in the standings and first in the East. Ironically, I think we had 72 points in Alex Ovechkin’s entire first season of play, ground zero of the rebuild. We have 195 goals scored, first in the NHL too. Perhaps we are on our way to a 300 goal season?

A Love Note to My Partners

I am really pleased, honored and excited to have a great group of friends to be my partners in ownership of our teams. Lincoln Holdings is run like a huge ethnic family. We are a tight knit group of friends focused on doing well by doing good.

We have – I believe - the most committed; most financially successful; most culturally diverse; and most local and philanthropic group of partners in all of sports.

We all live here in DC, VA and MD. We all go to games. We all serve as huge fans to our teams - no absentee owners here. We are all hyper competitive; want to win; and love the communities we serve.

We all started and grew our companies here; raised our families here; and we love the community and the fan base.

As a reminder, here is a quick snapshot of our ownership group. You can find more information by clicking here to read their full bios.

A Good Vibe and a Bad Feeling

Thank you. Here is a smart piece on our team and its Friday vibe after our three crisp wins so far this week.

But we can’t forget we play again tonight against a young, hungry and really talented team in the Coyotes.

They have blistering speed. They want to be the “next thing” and come in and beat us badly in our house. They have a ton of talent. I am impressed by their team.

Every team in the NHL is talented. Every team can win. It is a long, tough and grinding season. It is hard to get up for every game. Every game is worth two points in the standings. The fans deserve focus and attention to detail on every play.

I want us to play hard tonight and to get another two points. I am greedy that way for our fans.

Also I thank Tom for getting to an important point here. Health is key in the playoffs. The playoffs are an entire second season. If we can play our star players a bit less during the regular season, it will add jump to their legs for the season that really matters.

Jim Irsay is Cooler Than Me

There is a wonderful article on Jim Irsay, owner of the Colts, in this week’s issue of Sports Illustrated. The article was written by L. Jon Wertheim.

You should all read it. He is a great owner. He is a cool guy, a great dad and really connects with people.

His team is ultra successful and he has a great life and great taste. He made Indy love football maybe more than basketball! I feel and hope we are kindred-like spirits.

We are tangentially connected in an odd offbeat way. My family has a connection with the writer Jack Kerouac. His manuscript of the On The Road scroll went to auction back in 2001. I decided to bid on it and buy it. It meant a lot to me and people close to me. On the Road is one of my favorite books. Jack Kerouac also happens to be buried near my mom and dad in a cemetery in Lowell, Mass. I would have kept it for awhile in my home and then donated it to Georgetown University. That was the plan.

I had never done anything like this before so I called the auction house and they had to pre-approve me to bid. I asked how much was the highest price ever paid for a manuscript and was told $600k. I asked what should I get pre-approved for and they said “$2 million.” Thus, once approved, I was ready to go.

Two folks who work for my family went to NYC to bid while I was on the phone. The bidding opened at $100k and went up to $1 million in about three minutes and I had yet to bid.

When it hit $1 .1 million, the auctioneer said, “Fair warning.” There was one person left standing. I spoke into the phone to my associates, “Go for it now - $1.2 million.”

It then went to $1.3. I bid $1.4. He bid $1.5. I went $1.6. He said $1.7. I went $1.8. He said $1.9. I said $ 2.0 million. He said $2.1 million. I couldn’t bid anymore. I heard “fair warning – fair warning – fair warning! Sold!” And then there were cheers.
