Random Photo by CNN

CNN - The Case News Network that is. Steve Case clicked this photo last night at the Caps game of me and Pat Sajak as I opened a carton of my books as provided to me as a surprise by our publisher. Steve Case, by the way, has 300K+ people following him on Twitter now.

How random is all this? My book shows up game time with the Capstronaut in the house and Pat Sajak dropping by to say “hello”! I am happy as can be. :-)

Ground Control to Major Tom

The Capstronaut landed in the owner’s box last night with his glowing multimedia fan blowing full speed inside his suit to keep cool.

Did you know he can’t go to the bathroom during a game; that he doesn’t talk as he must remain “in character”; and that he loves the Caps and he does this all for you, our fans?

He has a great winning record at home. He is considering going to games on the road, by space shuttle I assume.

It was wonderful and fun to host him in our box. He is a true Americana hero!

Did you know that the Capitals have played the least amount of home games so far of any team in the East? I bet you didn’t and doesn’t that make our record more impressive?

We are now home for a nice stretch to even the schedule out. Of course the one away game will be in Pittsburgh. We have quite a stretch - Philly and Detroit at home – followed by Pittsburgh. What a week is coming up. Old time hockey.

Last night we won 6-1 in front of another total and crazed sellout crowd.

We needed to beat Toronto as they play us tough and they are a scrappy team. They beat us pretty good the last game that we played.

They do what they always do when they get blown out: Try to hurt someone to prove they are tough and up and coming to their coach and GM but they aren’t. They are just a team with a 16-29-9 record with 41 points, second to last in the East. As someone once said, ”You are what your record says you are.” Their own coach said they looked like “deer in the headlights.”

Alex Ovechkin had a fun night with 5 points. He is now second in the NHL in scoring. He has 62 points. He has played 8 games less than the league leader who has 64 points. He is third in goals scored and he is second in plus/minus. I think the fans can chant “MVP! MVP!” once again.

Jason Chimera continues to impress. So far the trade has turned out quite well for us. He is big, strong, fast and productive. And he plays with “jam.” We are very happy he has joined our lineup.

I look forward to see you all on Sunday. The Flyers will be flying out there. It will be a great test. Go Caps!

Revolution Money and American Express – Merger is Closed

Our deal was blessed by all relevant parties and it closed today. So it is official. Revolution Money is now part of the American Express Company. I so look forward to helping Ken Chenault, CEO of American Express, and his talented team to become more of a digital payments company and to helping to drive Revolution Money to meet its higher calling. The social payments space is red hot. We will move fast now to provide great and compelling services to consumers that focus on online money transfer.

I am psyched. We are all excited and we are raring to go! Congratulations to the Revolution Money team. You earned your success but we are just getting started…

Thank You Lavar – Thank You Chad

I have been listening to the Lavar Arrington and Chad Dukes show on 106.7 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. It is a very well done sports show with smart commentary and a broad look at ALL sports and teams in our community.

I wanted to thank both Lavar and Chad for treating our sport and our team and our fans with respect and dignity. It is also a smart programming move by Lavar and Chad too.

The talk is straightforward, analytic, fun, crisp and smart.

The Washington Capitals have a massive audience now. The audience is very educated, very wealthy and highly interactive. It spends lots of time and money on Caps related events, products and services. We cherish our fans. As a media property, it is a good programming choice to embrace and extend to this audience. Our fans are passionate and care deeply about the team and advertisers want to reach this audience. Be nice. Talk about our team and our fans. Ratings and advertisers will follow you. It is so simple and so obvious. Why doesn’t everyone get this business fact?

Buffalo

Watch this film on SnagFilms.com, it is called The Forgotten City. It is a tale of loss and how many of our great inner cities have become war zones.

We need our inner cities to be thriving and beacons of economic development. We are quite fortunate that DC has reversed its trend of citizens departing and that as a city, it is actually growing and attracting people; growing its tax base; and attracting young businesses. We need to find ways to make sure the neighborhoods keep their authenticity and that we can co-mingle long time residents and “newbies” and find new jobs in our inner cities. We owe our great neighborhoods revitalization. And love and care.

This film touches on the many issues that face our country and a great city such as Buffalo. Watch it this weekend. Thank you.

An Open Note to Capstronaut

Rocket Man.

Astroboy.

One small step for man.

Tonight  – Caps vs. Maple Leafs - you must come join us in the Owner’s Box.

We serve Tang with dinner.

If you are at the game tonight, just come on in. Find me. You are welcomed. Astronauts are true American heroes in my book.

I am reachable at WashingtonCaps@aol.com.

PS - Ron Wilson will love seeing you behind the bench.

Jeff Schultz

Sarge!!!!!! He leads the entire NHL in plus/minus rating. He is ahead of Alex Ovechkin in plus/minus on our team.

He is quiet. He doesn’t toot his own horn. He does his job and he does it very well.

So I will toot his horn.

We are proud of Jeff; his development; his acumen to make smart plays; and his ability to be on the ice and make good things happen for us.

We think we have a great group of young developing D men and we are quite happy with Jeff Schultz this season.

Go Caps! And thank goodness we never listen to some of the “experts” that call into radio shows after our games. Just saying…”Jeff Schultz leads the entire NHL in plus/minus rating.”

Showing Heart

Another day; another game; another comeback. Only this one was successful. A 5-4 shootout win after being down 4-1.

We can take stock and believe that our team has a lot of heart and character. Thankfully with our depth and scoring prowess, we are really never out of a game. That is “goodness.”

I was pleased that we never got discouraged or played like we didn’t think we could win the game. I was pleased with “new guy” Jason Chimera. He skates like the wind. He scored, had an assist and a fight - a Gordie Howe hat trick last night – welcome Jason!

I am happy that Jose Theodore came in and played quite well. If we get average to above average NHL caliber goaltending, we are well positioned. Goaltending and special teams play is key to success in the long run and in the playoffs.

But heart, determination and a “never say die” attitude are also very important. We won 2 of 3 on the road all in the division. We have 62 points. We are second in the East in terms of points generated.

We aren’t happy with how we are playing but we are winning and getting points. We now – finally – come home for awhile. Some home cooking is what we need. Come out on Friday night and scream your lungs out as we now enter a very tough stretch of games. Go Caps!
