  1. Matt, if Ovechkin has been such a defensive liability why is he head and shoulders better in goals against while on the ice? That’s right, Ovechkin has been on the ice for 32 goals against this year to Crosby’s 60 (not a misprint). Is is because of the Capitals’ dominating defense and goaltending? Or is it maybe that Ovechkin is actually a good defender who does exactly what coaches ask him to do? And then ask yourself why Sidney Crosby is a -3 in the Olympics against teams other than winless teams. Or why is Sidney Crosby a -8 on the road this year when the opposing coach has the last change? Or why Sidney Crosby is a minus player since November 1st? Is it because of his defensive prowess?

And by the way, the reason Ted was stunned has nothing to do with whether it’s true or not. It has to do with the fact that Milbury within the last month said that Crosby was Ovechkin’s daddy and trashed him while propping up Sid only a day before. Both he and Roenick were obviously given their positions to take in the debate.

  2. Um, Ted, did you hear him refer to your two boys as “Eurotrash” and say Boyle’s late spear was warrented???

Can you get him fired please, thanks.

  3. Teddy, It’s usually the obvious answer and Milbury finally got it right for once. He does have a strange way of showing his affection! As one blogger just said Ovie scores, Ovie assits, Ovie sets it up, and Ovie hits, just ask Jagar. But most of all Ovie’s determination and passion is contagious! Just ask Malkin. Boom Goes the Dynamite

  4. If what Mike Milbury says, doesn’t matter….why even listen? Ted, he’s at least played on the highest level, so his opinion is actually credible compared to yours. Just find it funny you are listening to his every word (sad).

  5. I fail to see how “Matt” considers Crosby the total package and Ovi not? Ovechkin hits, does Crosby? Ovechkin scores, oh yeah, and led the NHL twice in a row. Ovechkin assists. Ovechkin is the two time MVP of the league, doesn’t that stand for “Most Valuable Player”? I’m assuming he’s most valuable to the team he plays on..

The “leader” bs that all Pens fans and Milbury state simply isn’t true..what’s Ovi’s record as team Captain again? I fail to see why Pens and Crysby lovers have to continue to debate this over and over. Look at the facts / stats.

Just because somebody has a Stanley cup doesn’t mean they are the better, total package. If anything, it means the whole team worked well together and won it together (and had great goaltending) – hockey is a team sport you know. It’s not even worth wasting my time anymore.

  6. There’s a difference between a player you’d build a franchise around, and the best player. A player you’d build around has to be more than a great player, and both Ovie and Crosby have that special something. I think Milbury was hedging since he’s been getting flack for his Crosbyism, but I was surprised by JR. We all know who he thinks the best player is, but in this context, he took Crosby. I believe JR’s answer more because he’s not known for holding back.

  7. I think that was contrived by NBC, both commentators stated their cases through clenched teeth, and I believe they were made to do this for their back and forth at the beginning of the coverage. Roenick has already made comments about his admiration of OV and Milbury has made clear many times his contempt.
    My .02 cents

  8. Ted,

You are in media – of course you understand what Milbury said. Dick Ebersol gave him his lines to deliver. NBC wants a debate (between JR and MM) but with no fists (or shoes) flying.

And wasn’t it nice of Ovi to pay back Jagr for the $77 million hit on you and the Caps!? Short Jagr, long Ovi futures!! Go Ted, Go Caps.

    You are the best.

    Peter

  9. Particularly stunning given that earlier this week, when asked the same question on air during a game, Mike Milbury and Jeremy Roenick virtually insulted each other while Milbury picked Crosby and Roenick picked Ovechkin. Then yesterday, it’s exactly the opposite. I thought they had mistakenly read each other’s teleprompter!

  10. When will Milbury and the media respect Ovechkin and the capitals!?!

Fire this guy and all of the media–they just aren’t fair to the greatest franchise in the history of a.) sports b.)hockey c.)ovechkin! d.)crosbee sux!

  11. Absolutely! I had to rewind, just to re-listen that I heard him say that correctly. What gives?! He then justified it by saying that Ovechkin brings ticket sales and as a GM that would be his number 1 concern. I need to find this on youtube.

  12. Did Milbury then say he’d trade OV for picks, as seems to be his legacy as one of the league’s worst GM’s? Actually, what am I saying – I think we all know he would have taken Cam Barker, presumably to play in front of DiPietro.

  13. Milbury is arguably the worst general manager in the history of the game. So its a completely understandable endorsement.

  14. I guarantee NBC made him do it… It was too staged. And J.R. seemed to flip-flop too.

Looking at Mad Mike’s track record him picking Ovie over Crosby is only a bad thing.

  15. That was the most transparent attempt at damage control I have seen since Tiger’s video press release.

  16. so you are stunned by one of the league’s WORST GM’s of all time picking Ovechkin over Crosy? tell me more.

  17. AO = Milbury’s Daddy.

Though judging Milbury’s MO, he would take AO and then trade him to Philadelphia for Dan Carcillo, Aaron Asham, the rights to negotiate with Epic Beard Man, and two #1 picks.

  18. May I ask why you are so stunned? I am not going to deny that Ovechkin is a fantastic player…but stunned? Crosby has proven that he is a total leader. Is Ovechkin the best scorer in the game? 100%, absolutely. However, as far as a total package is concerned (leadership, backchecking, defensive poise, and representing the team to the media/outside world), I give the slight nod to Crosby. I can easily understand why someone would pick Ovechkin, but to say you are “stunned” is a bit dramatic. Besides, Ovechkin will be in the KHL at the end of his contract anyway.

  19. I can’t get the sound of the puck hitting Millers pads out of my head! I’m in Nova Scotia so biased about Crosby. The one-handed open net goal last night was fairly Herculean, eh? Hi to Maney if you see him around.

  20. So all this bashing that Millbury has been doing is just like when a boy likes a girl in elementary school. He does everything the opposite of showing his affection

  21. Too suspicious, IMO. Roenick took the other side. I wonder how much of that was scripted by the NBC producers…very fishy.

  22. Honestly, Ted, I think this was a setup between Milbury and Roenick. Based on many prior comments during the Olympics and before, I think it’s clear that Roenick favors Ovie’s style of play over Crosby’s, and vice versa for Milbury. They were just mixing it up for entertainment value and to say something unexpected.
    That’s my $0.02, anyway.
    Preston

  23. I’m stunned too, because in a previous game, their between periods banter seemed to indicate the opposite! I’m also shocked that Roenick, a former US Olympian himself, didn’t pick the US to win!

  24. I figured either milbury lost the “coin toss” with Roenick, or they had both moved to the Bizzaro Planet!!! cause there was Roenick singing the praises of Sydney, and Milbury was cooing over OV, a complete reversal from earlier in the week!!! go figure, LOL. ..

  25. You mean you weren’t aware that NBC would be staging such a discussion to get Milbury out of the doghouse in advance of his return to covering the NHL? Roenick looked just as surprised as my husband and I that Milbury said what he did. And not in a million years do I really believe that Milbury would take Ovechkin. Totally. Staged.

  26. How could anybody NOT take Ovechkin, he scores, he assists, he hits, and leaves it all on the ice. If Malkin played to form, Crosby would arguably be second best on his team.

  27. Funny thing is that Milbury was actually tap-dancing the issue. They were asked the question, “Who is the best player”.

Roenick came straight out and said “Crosby” and explained why very articulately.

Milbury wouldn’t actually come right out and say it. He just said that Ovechkin played with more passion and that for the purposes of “ticket sales”, he would take Ovechkin as a GM.

Notice how he never said, during that whole conversation, that Ovechkin was actually better? Hah! I think he felt like he would have been crucified if he would have agreed with Roenick so he had to toss Ovechkin fans a bone.

Amusing to watch the political gears in his head grind away when he is presented with a question like this.
