Wow! What an inspiring sequence. Nick Backstrom is a leader, a team-first player. The crowd recognizing perhaps a defining moment in the evolution of our team and Nick acknowledged his self sacrifice with a thunderous ovation.

Beautiful! Niklas Backstrom is the most selfless of hockey players. And that’s a primary reason why we can win The Cup.
I attended a December Caps practice, where I bought two Caps hats for my brothers-in-law in Stockholm as Chirstmas presents. I stood outside in the cold after practice for Niklas to sign them. The Caps faithful told me he doesn’t do that, that he’s too shy and humble.
But when the opportunity came, I asked, “Niklas, kan du skiv ditt namn til min kompisar in Sverige? I will give these hats to them when I go there for Christmas.”
He obliged, and I could not have been happier. Thank you Niklas. You made two Swedish hockey players (one coaches AIK innebandy) and my Swedish in-laws happy.
Keep being “the Selfless Swede.” And take the shots when they come! We all want Ted to check box #41!!!
We were out of our seats in relief, disbelief and pride. 412 (and the rest of the stadium) really loved and appreciated what Backie did for us during that penalty kill last night. I can’t remember a non-playoff cheer as loud as the cheer that followed those blocked shots. What a player you have, Ted – make sure he stays around for a while, please!
It was amazing, and it was also amazing to see Verizon Center explode in response to it. I can never thank you enough Mr Leonsis for what you’ve done for our beloved sport in this town.

One of the best PK shifts this season. Heck, the BEST overall shift this season. Backstrom “gets it” as to what it takes to be a champion!
