Spit Out That Coffee

Here is an article ranking the best defensive corps units in hockey.

Can it be? Wait for it…Wait for it…The Capitals D unit is ranked pretty high.In fact it is ranked first in the NHL.

How can that be?

Check out this methodology. See where Mike Green ranks as well.

How can this be?

Some pundits and some fans will spit out their coffee this morning when they read this article and analysis.

We happen to think we have a pretty good team with depth and talent and strength everywhere. The old clichés about us are sometimes lost in cyber space stereo typing. You can’t have the most points in the NHL with 6 games left to play if you have terrible defensemen. I appreciate these kinds of analytic reviews of players and teams. They seem much more thought out than the typical email snarl of…” You can never win as you have a terrible D corp and no crease clearing gritty D men”. Read it and reap…

  3. Well, let’s not forget the fact that it mostly relies upon offensive stats. And the plus minus is really skewed because the Caps score a lot. As well, +/- also doesn’t take into account goals given up on the powerplay. The reasoning is very iffy in this article.

  4. I don’t think the caps D are as bad as some, however I would not rank them top of the league.
The analysis here takes individual statistics and compiles them in to a unit based ranking, which isn’t really a true measurement.

They use +/- as one of the factors, a stat that is elevated by the offensive numbers put up (with the exception of Green) by the forwards, that benefits the D

They use goals/assists as a factor. Again, subtract green and the top defensive goal getter on the caps is Poti with 4, same with assists, Poti’s 19 assists are 2nd to Greens 54

And it goes on. I’m not trying to make it sound like the caps have a poor defense, because that’s not true, but he is using a purely statistical approach that does not allow for any intangibles.

The caps have a good D, but I would not put them top of the league, but that’s just my opinion

  5. All that counts are W’s, but these things are fun. Don’t look back at who’s got the number two ranking. Let the playoffs begin!

  6. Great read from TSN and nice catch, Ted. I guess at least one Canadian knows aboot hockey, eh? I think all in the hockey world (except teams fighting for a playoff spot) are starting to look past the regular season to the playoffs. Hard to wait! Good luck and be happy.
