Blah – Blah – Blah Redux

I think this player should be talking to his ownership and coaching staff about their rebuild plan to compete for a Stanley Cup NOT to our fan base and players about ours.

And then I think this player should stand up and communicate to his team’s fan base about their plan to compete for a Cup and how they will qualify for the playoffs year after year. And then back it up. It is a simple formula: Outline a plan – communicate it - back it up.

As I have noted, the best way to compete for a Cup is to qualify for the playoffs which Columbus has done exactly how many times to date?

Why are we even giving this guy airtime?

Let us move on.

  1. Whatcha got now, Ted? Looks like Umby was spot on. Ha ha! That picture of you after the Habs scored to make it 2-0 was priceless.

  2. Pond hockey doesn’t win in the playoffs, just like the Capitals every_single_year. Try winning something first and then you have some substance behind your angst about a player’s criticisms.

  3. Columbus plays in arguably the toughest division in the league. The Capitals play in without a doubt the weakest division in the league. There is not another playoff team in the Capitals division. I don’t think part of the Blue Jackets plan is to tank for lottery picks, like the Capitals have done. Have fun golfing before May starts. You better hope the Flyers beat the Rangers this weekend so you don’t have to face Lundqvist, he will be your downfall.

  4. I think Umberger hit the nail on the head. You guys all call him a sore loser now but I think he will be proven right in the very near future. A team that is sub par defensively, has an abysmal PK, has a weak record in close games, a weak record against other playoff teams and has not played a very meaningful game in weeks is always vulnerable.

  5. Some pretty cocky comments from a fanbase who has beaten the lowly jackets exactly once in the last 4 tries. When the jackets had a coach who knew what he was doing and a goalie who could actually stop the puck, not only did the caps not win, they didn’t score a goal! Once the Caps meet a team that are well coached and can defend, they get stopped up. 12 odd man rushes against in a game and the coach says: ‘for the most part, I thought we played pretty well defensively.’ Yikes. Be afraid, Caps fans, be very afraid.

  6. Take out… Ovechkin and what do you have? How many times have YOU gone to the playoffs past the 3rd round? I would like to know your plan before you got Ovechkin?? I predict Caps not getting past the 2nd round… 1st round exit if you play Philly… ! :D

  7. Ted,
Umberger’s comments are bang on. He is just saying what everyone else in the NHL is thinking. Good for him.

Just wondering….you bash the Jackets organization…just wondering what exactly have the Capitals done in the playoffs? I don’t think you have much room to talk about playoff success.

  8. Mr. Ted -

    Well said, sir.

Hats off to you and your – no – OUR organization
for a great finish to OUR best regular season to date.

Now comes the real challenge. I saw and touched the
Stanley Cup once in Landover. I want it, you want it,
we all want it. Let’s get it!

    Steve

  9. You are absolutely correct Teddy.

If I am not mistaken, these will be the exact words that RJ will utter to put a proper plan in place for next year’s CBJ Stanley Cup run.

    RJ to Scott Howson

“What do we have to do to get Gary B to move us to the East?”

  10. Ted,

Love the response to Vermette! Ready for the post-season! Thanks for putting together a great team this year.

    Thanks,

    Jay DeLancey

  11. I agree with you. His statement simply smells like bitterness. That said, I kind of feel bad for the Columbus Blue Jackets because they play in, arguably, the toughest division in the league.

  12. Caps first 10 years: 2 playoff appearances, never past first round.

CBJs first 9 years: 1 playoff appearance. One season left to match the glorious record set forth by the Caps first decade.

Give it some time. Moving on.

  14. RJ never said Columbus had a good plan or that they were better than Washington. He just said a lot of teams in the west can beat the Capitals in the playoffs. Relax man.

  15. When your team has only won one playoff series in the last decade, you’re not exactly in the best position to be doling out post-season advice. Oh, wait. You’ve arrived.

  16. I’m afraid that I have to disagree with you. It is true that his team did poorly, but I do not see why that should invalidate his observations about the team he played against. The question ought to be whether he is correct, not whether he is entitled to speak his mind.

As I am in Philadelphia now, I do not get to see the Caps. But a friend of mine who sees the team when they play the Flyers and who watches the Caps from time to time on television agrees with the substance of Umberger’s criticism.

    Anyway, we shall see.

  17. the best way to compete for a cup is to make it past the second round of the playoffs! wooo!

  18. And likewise, I think that you should talk about “arriving” when you actually win something.

  19. But it begs the question, Ted: does he have a point?

My retort to his comments are that we’re playing a last place team in a game that bears little importance because we all but had the President’s Cup and home-ice advantage wrapped up. And now we have both. How much credence can you put into games that mean literally nothing? Clearly he’s bitter and disappointed in his own teams performance this year and should focus his dissatisfaction on better things than bashing others.

  20. Ted,

I agree with you totally. This will be the year that the Caps silence their critics when Ovi Lifts that Cup high and the Red Nation Rocks the house.

Congratulations on the President’s Trophy…Only one more prize left to go and this is gonna be the year!!!!!

  21. Columbus Blue Jackets Playoff History:

    Appearances 1
    Series Won 0
    Games Won 0

    That about sums it up…

  22. I agree. Didn’t like him when he was a Flyer and still don’t as a Jacket. But it was a great time in Columbus this weekend seeing half their arena rocking the red. And, oh yeah, we won. That’s all that needs to be said.

  23. Of course we are not talking about Scotty Bowman making those comments. He is not even that great of a player. Look at his plus and minus stats over his career.

  24. Umberger talks non-sense ever since he was flat out nailed with a open ice hit from Brian Campbell a few years back. If I recall it was during the first round of the playoffs but Umberger was a Flyer then. Knocked him out pretty good.

How ironic that Brian Campbell was the one who delivered the hit….. one of the best I’ve ever seen.

  25. Why are we even giving this guy airtime?

Considering you’ve referenced it in 3 of the last 4 posts, you should ask yourself that question.

  26. Ted:

You are the man! I am glad that you addressed the subject of Umberger. I was surprised by his comments but not surprised by you. Thanks for taking the high road, as usual. You are a role model for all.

  27. His team lost, and he’s dumping on the winning team? Loser. The way to shut him up is to keep winning. To shut them all up.
