Rumblings

Some random thoughts this morning.

Our NHL commish is pretty tech savvy. I recently saw a demo of 3-D TV. I got very excited. I emailed Gary Bettman to discuss it and he had already seen it and witnessed NHL action in 3-D. He beat me to the punch.

Then yesterday I was exchanging emails with him and I noted that he had been using an iPad. He is using it as a Kindle-like device – watching game highlights – and doing his email on it. He also listens to music and plays games. Very cool and very forward thinking. I am impressed!

The NHL playoffs are wild - OT games galore. I thought the NBC game with the Blackhawks and the Predators was great theater and great for the NHL.

And yes, I have received more than 30 emails overnight from folks asking me what was the difference between Hossa’s “little push” and Oveckin’s little push. Why was Alex Ovechkin tossed from the game and suspended and Hossa wasn’t? Hossa scored the game winner in OT by the way after serving a 5 minute penalty at the end of regulation that carried over into OT. Isn’t life ironic?

I can’t and won’t comment. That is food for thought for the blogosphere and fans and mainstream media. Officials have a tough job indeed. Why wasn’t there a penalty called against Montreal for the high stick on Belanger where he lost 8 teeth? Was that even a penalty? It is in the past so who cares?

You can lose your mind dwelling on stuff like this. Just move on and play the game. Fight through it all and don’t let little things like this get us distracted!

My Neighbors

Yesterday I ran around town to do some errands. I am glad I am back home now safe and sound.

I started my day at a local bank ATM machine. I needed some cash for the weekend and then the trip to Montreal on Monday. As I was withdrawing cash a couple stood behind me. They were in their late 60′s, I believe. As I got the cash, I turned and the lovely older woman said to me, “Hi Ted. NBC Baby – NBC.”

I said, ”NBC?”

She said, “Nothing But Cup baby. Nothing but the Cup. What happened to you guys last night?” I smiled. We made some small talk and I left.

Next up was my local Blockbuster. As I entered a friend grabbed my arm and said, “Don’t choke – don’t blow it.” I said, “Thanks. With friends like you, who needs enemies?”

I then picked up a few films and at checkout the woman standing in front of me said, “What is up with your team man? That was some poor performance. I thought you guys looked tired and scared last night.” I said thank you and took my films and left.

I then went to get a pedicure. My wife said my toe nails had become lethal weapons. I entered the store and a young girl at the receptionist stand said, “Let’s go Caps! Montreal? You can’t beat Montreal. What is up with that?” I sheepishly was led to a station and sat with a newspaper covering my face reading. When I finished I went to pay and another nice lady came up to me and said, “Don’t worry – things will get better for you next week, I hope.” I said, “Thank you, I think.” and snuck away.

I then went to my local Safeway – oy vey - where a young man approached me and asked for an autograph and told me to fire our Coach. I said, “Thanks for the input.”

Then a couple approached me and told me they were season ticket holders and warned me about allowing fans about drinking too much beer at our games. They also said we need more grit in the line up. I said, “‘Thank you for caring so much and for the heads up.”

I then went to produce aisle and the lady in the aisle said to me, “I am surprised to see you out in public today.” I smiled at her. And she was trying to be nice.

I then went to the local pharmacy. My allergies are killing me. I was approached by a man who owns a local pizza parlor. He said, “Your players love my food but for some reason they don’t come here anymore. And I need to warn you - Alex Ovechkin drives too fast at Kettler.” I said I would talk to Alex and “thank you.”

As I checked out at the register, the cashier said to me, “You need a new power play man. You guys stink.” I laughed.

I said, “Yes - you are right. Thank you.”

I tried to be polite as possible.

I then drove home. I am now reading my email. Yikes. You should see some of the things being said to me now.

So we are up 3 to 2 in this series. We finished with the best record in the league this regular season. We lost last night 2 to 1.

I will be staying in for the rest of the weekend. Thank you very much.

As Noted – We Need To Respect The Process

We didn’t on Friday night and we lost a tough game 2-1.

In the NHL playoffs every game is a mini drama. Every game is tough to win and every opponent needs to be respected. I think we expected to play a demoralized team instead of a desperate team that wanted to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Montreal played a playoff saving game last night. They played with desperation and determination. We did too but only for 45 minutes or so of a 60 minute game.

And thus we get what we deserve. We are forced to go back to Montreal for a Monday night game. The pressure gets amped up upon us and the negative emotional emails start to flow and the media starts to snarl. It is all deserved and the only way to make it stop is to win. Pretty simple formulae - win and smile; lose and frown. Happy or sad? Which do we want to be? We shall see next game.

We are up in the series 3 games to 2. We have received very good goaltending. Montreal received fantastic goaltending I thought.

We have some players that have yet to perform to their regular season statistics. We have a lot of depth. We will play better and we will demand better accountability and performance from the team. That is all we can do.

I am proud of the grit displayed by Eric Belanger. I am not happy that this obvious penalty call wasn’t made. To lose 8 teeth and NOT earn a power play is a tough road to hoe but our power play is so inefficient right now it may NOT have made any difference. It is so difficult to realize that we have scored more on the penalty kill shorthanded – two goals - than we have on the power play with a man advantage – one goal. Weird science right there.

This too shall pass I believe. We have work to do. Keep the faith. Go Caps!
