Rolling Thunder

Over 800,000 people came to DC this weekend on more than 500,000 motorcycles. An amazing display. All wearing some kind of leather in 90 degree heat.

Rolling Thunder was here to remind us to never forget our veterans, our MIAs and our POWs.

They come to ride by the White House and buzz POTUS as a friendly reminder.

But POTUS isn’t here this weekend.

He must be in Louisiana helping our fisherman in the Gulf. Nope.

He is in Chicago.

He must be taking in a Stanley Cup Finals game. Nope.

Our President missed an awesome display of chrome and noise this weekend.

We shall never forget.

See this film widget for a bunch of Memorial Day themed films too. It is OK to watch them after Memorial Day as well.

The Great Switch

An amazing thing is happening. People who were Mac folks became Windows/PC folks are now going back to Macs in a big way.

My first computer was an Apple II.

I then had one of the first 100 Macs as an Apple developer back in 1983.

In the 90′s I switched. Apple had lost its way a bit. The Macs had become slow and PCs with Windows were everywhere. They were faster, better and cheaper. And there were more third party developers.

Wow

What a chat transcript. What a set of questions and answers. What a dominant atmosphere regarding the Winter Classic in Pittsburgh and in DC some time in the future.

It is great to see people debating hockey related subjects in the summer. Thank you. It is 95 degrees outside.

Try to be happy. You can do it.

My favorite line? ”I have two hams but no bread.”

I Do Not Dream in Acronyms

I am not that smart.

I always use the product too before I invest or become an evangelist.

I never understand decks or brochures.

There is some very straightforward advice here. Read this one.

The best companies in the world today are at the cross roads of where technology meets liberal arts.

Take some English classes; learn how to communicate; to write and to emote; nail the product’s positioning; and know its essence.

Dennis Hopper RIP

One of the great scenes in filmmaking history - check out Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken. Wow. What awesome acting here. True Romance was a great, great movie.

He was an original and starred in some of the great films - Easy Rider; Apocalypse Now; Hoosiers; and True Romance - amongst so many others.

He will be missed. A great one has left the building.

Fair – Another One on Ovechkin

I thought this article was fair and balanced.

Alex Ovechkin had a great year by the stats.

Alex Ovechkin had a tough year. As noted.

Next season can’t come soon enough for us all.

Put the past behind and only look forward. That is all one can do. Rest up Alex. You played a lot of hockey this season. Chill out. Heal up. Come back refreshed and happy and ready to play. Enjoy the family time. Go Caps!

Let Us Be Focused On What Is Doable

The Winter Classic is a big event but is also a regular season game worth two points to the winning team. It also serves as a game for season ticket holders and suite holders against their regular season packages. The NHL runs the event in conjunction with media partner, NBC.

The game must be played in a stadium or an arena that has security; locker rooms; public facilities; medical staff and appropriate health care stations; can house ushers; can serve food and provide customer services; and provides all the amenities delivered to the players, the fans and the staff during a regular season game. The facility must have appropriate levels of lighting and power to be able to serve the fans as well as the media and all of the sponsors.

Hence when we do play a game in DC, it will be played in a stadium. It could be a football stadium; a baseball stadium; a college football stadium; or some other kind of outdoor arena.

As romantic and wonderful as it sounds to play on the Mall, it simply won’t happen. I truly understand the desire to do something unique but to replicate what is needed to produce the game on the Mall would not be feasible.

This is a once in a lifetime event. The logistics around it are very hard to deal with and quite expensive as it is but it is worth it because of the nature of the event.

Winter Classic Big News

As you’ve no doubt heard by now, the Capitals will play the Penguins in the NHL Winter Classic in Pittsburgh on January 1, 2011. The game will be played in the same stadium where the Steelers play their NFL games. This marquee match up on NBC promises to be a great event and an important game for us. I am proud that we were chosen to play in this game. And I’m sure the interest from fans of the great game of hockey will be very strong. I also believe that the ratings will be equally as strong for NBC. We have endeavored to get tickets for our season ticket holders and our fans for this game. I believe we will be able to accommodate everyone who makes reasonable requests on us and I’m hopeful that we can have a strong showing and create a Sea of Red in Pittsburgh. We will be communicating plans and details in regard to purchasing tickets in the coming weeks and months.

What may have been lost today in all of the excitement is that the NHL has made a commitment to our fans and to the Washington Capitals that they will produce an NHL Winter Classic game here in Washington DC within a reasonable amount of time. For that show of support, I am truly grateful and I’m really excited that we’ll be able to play an outdoor game in Washington DC. No details have been finalized as to when, where, and against whom, but know we will do our best to produce a great event and hold a very compelling game. That we can host a game here in DC is a testament to our great fan base. Thank you so much. Your support and fanaticism is being rewarded and noticed across the league.

Let us not focus on the future. Let us focus on next year’s Winter Classic in Pittsburgh and embrace this opportunity. I’m also hopeful that you will want to join us in Pittsburgh and that you will want to be part of this truly epic and exciting event.

Thanks again and Go Caps!

Thank You Pollin Family – Thank you Abe

This editorial article is fitting and appropriate. And says it all about what Abe Pollin and his family mean to Washington DC.

Steny Hoyer and Tom Davis “get it.”

This is spot on, on all counts related to Abe and his family.

We have massively big shoes to try to fill. We can never replace them only try to do our best to pay homage to the legacy and chart our own way forward. We intend to do the right things the right way. Thank you for this tribute to the Pollin family in today’s Washington Post.
