As a Hockey Fan

I look forward to watching these Stanley Cup Finals.

Two great teams in two great hockey markets.

What an amazing story. The Flyers made the playoffs on the last day of the season and had to win in a shootout. They were down 3 to 0 to the Bruins and here they are in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Canadiens simply ran out of gas after two seven games series against us and then the Penguins. They had a remarkable run.

This match up in the Finals will be a good one and good for the NHL and its fans.

I wish we were still playing obviously, but now as a fan of the game I look forward to watching the Finals on NBC and Versus. Info on schedule here.

Kudos to Yahoo’s CEO

For saying what we all feel at some of these industry confabs.

Click here. Can you believe it?

I bet that felt good.

I bet her PR staff’s eyes melted in their heads over this one.

I always try to be polite in front of the media, but to be honest sometimes it is hard. The little voice in my head often times says what she said in public. So far my filter has been stronger than my secondary voice — so good for her. Let it all hang out once in awhile. We are all human.

Thought I’d Never See the Day

Steve Case convened an online pioneer’s party at his home on Sunday evening. It was so great to reconnect with folks, some whom I have known and worked with since 1980!

The two companies that were central to the pioneers who we talked about the most that night were Apple and Microsoft with Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates as founders. I believe these two companies and personalities have been the central players in our business lifetimes.

Microsoft has always been the leader in revenues, market cap, leadership, and ubiquity.

But take a look at this chart from Business Insider. If you can believe it, Apple is about to become more valuable than Microsoft in terms of market capitalization. I thought I would never see that day. And between them both companies will soon approach a half a trillion dollars of market cap on Wall Street.

Two companies that were built to last.

No Pain No Gain

Alex Ovechkin. Alex Semin. Semyon Varlamov.

They all played a lot of hockey this year.

A lot of hockey for their country Russia, as well.

There were great disappointments this season. They didn’t medal in the Olympics. We lost as a team in the first round of the NHL playoffs after winning the President’s Trophy during the regular season. And Russia just lost in the finals at the World Championships.

These pictures tell the story.

But if it doesn’t kill you it makes you stronger.

I hope our players will now take some quality time off away from the rink to rest up, heal up, and then come back next season refreshed and clear of mind and spirit, and only dedicated to our team’s success. There is no shame in effort. There is no shame in working hard for your country and its hockey program.

Here’s to hoping that next year is all about the Washington Capitals and our long playoff success.

A Test of Time

AOL has had many lives and many reincarnations. It has longevity. Today it celebrates its 25th birthday.

It will be great to see so many old friends at campus and it will be an honor to have a dedication in Steve Case and Jim Kimsey’s name. I am also honored to be recognized. See this Washington Post article within.

I retired from AOL in 2006. I guess I was right in my assumption that AOL would become a media company based on content and programming, and not an access based firm. I am thrilled the company is getting a major make over by new CEO Tim Armstrong. We all wish the employees and share holders of the new AOL the best and good fortune. AOL is like a family member to many of us.

In terms of coming home I shall always remember a philosopher’s great words…

“Be the way
Show the way
Go away
Stay away.”

Thank you AOL. Happy Birthday.

Go Bears!

They are back in the Calder Cup Finals and for the fourth year out of the last five years!

Building a tradition of winning and of championship expectations. We have a great partnership indeed.

Read this article for more information. Support Hershey. Support the Bears! We are proud. We are excited for their ongoing level of excellence and success.

3 and 0

Feels good to get off to such a fast start this season as the Mystics are now 3-0.

Kudos to coach Plank and staff. Even though the team is short handed, it appears ready to play and has a lot of character. The game was fun and the crowd was loud.

Come check out the Mystics sometime soon. You and your family will enjoy the game. It is affordable and it is a great night out on the town.
