Nice

I went to the Nationals game last night with my family. It was a fun game and a great win for the home team.

We saw an inside the park home run AND a triple play and some great plays by our fantastic third baseman.

I was congratulated about a thousand times with quotes like:

“Good work last night.”

“Way to go.”

“Awesome start.”

“You da man.”

“We love you. Way to get that first pick.”

As if I had anything to do with any of that :-) . Thank you so much. Embrace the luck and the good fortune.

Later in the game I went to the men’s room, and as I walked up the stairsĀ  fans in the stands started to chant “Don’t trade the pick… don’t trade the pick… don’t trade the pick.” Don’t worry — we won’t!

As we were leaving the game the same group started to chant “We want Wall… We want Wall…We want Wall.” No comment.

Thank you for feeling positive and enthusiastic. I love mingling and hanging out with fans. I feed off your energy. Read this article and thank you again.

Magically Delicious

My wife laughed out loud over this one “Magically Delicious”. Read this and guffaw.

I have no lucky charms. I didn’t wear a lucky watch. I felt confident that it was “our time” to have good fortune.

Mrs. Pollin wore a lucky ring and Ernie Grunfeld has his lucky charm. It worked and I am thrilled.

I want to assure everyone that we won’t make the first pick in the draft a “sugar buzz high”. We will work to craft a team and a system methodically and with care. We will articulate a plan and strategy built around analytics and with our ultimate goal in mind. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will the new Wizards.

One player does not make a team or a turnaround. We have a lot of work to do.

There will be a new CBA soon in the NBA. We will have to keep that in mind.

We have a lot of players yet to draft and develop.

This will be fun and it will be hard and it may take longer than we think!

Be enthusiastic. Be positive and upbeat. Try to be happy and embrace and extend the good fortune.

Random Luck

We deserve the first pick in the NBA draft. Luck balances out although it is random. Can you name a team that went through more hard times than the Wizards did last year?

I would like to thank Irene Pollin for bringing us the good fortune, and for wearing Mr. Pollin’s Championship ring on the big stage last night. I know that had something to do with it.

I am very happy for the city and for our fans. It is a wonderful statement of rebirth and of reinvention while paying homage to the past but focused firmly on a bright future. We won the lottery. We get the first pick in the draft. We can say we are lucky…and now we want to be lucky and good and then lucky and great!

I am still sanguine — crafting great teams built to last is difficult, but it just got a tad easier. And I am hopeful that we draft, develop, and then retain a great franchise player. Building through the draft is job 1 for this franchise.

We are just starting out on a long difficult journey together. I am up for the challenge. My friends and partners are up for the challenge. It won’t be easy but we will enjoy the ride.

You feeling lucky? I always do. Thanks for the support and best wishes. I can’t respond to so many emails today but will try my best. And I lost my cell phone last night in NJ somewhere so if I don’t respond to your calls immediately don’t take it personally :-) !

Enjoy the ride though! Go Wizards Go.

Trust in the System

We have come a long way as a franchise and as a fan base.

We now can draft, develop, and sign here for a long period of time some of the very best players in the NHL.

It started with Alex Ovechkin. He loves it here. He trusts us and he signed a mega deal. He will be here for a life time it seems!

And now Nick Backstrom has signed a ten year deal. Nick and Alex are certainly 2 of the 10 best players in the entire league and form the basis of our core. And they like and respect and trust one another.

And let us NOT forget that Mike Green. He signed a 5 year extension too. He is a first team All star. Make that 3 of the 10 best players in the NHL here for a long, long time.

These young players all want to be here. They love it in DC and love playing for our fans. They all deserved to be rewarded with long term deals and with our support.

I would much rather commit to young players that we have grown to know and trust than players on other teams that come to us as free agents.

That is our commitment. That is our plan. We want players who want to be here and want to help us to win a championship in DC. That is all that Nick Backstrom talks about. He “gets it”. He is a wonderful, reliable and productive player. He is a great team mate and leader. He has never missed a game and he is exactly what we want to build around.

We thank Nick and his family for their belief in what we are trying to do here in DC. We now have secured a big part of our future, together.

We also know that Nick will be a fantastic mentor for our new rookie “Viking” and we are excited to have two young, talented centers signed and announced all in one day. Let us all welcome Marcus Johansson to DC as well. We are all excited about his potential to become a wonderful two way center.

I bet these two young players form a strong center ice for us for a long, long time.

Thank you — Go Caps.

Ping Pong

Wish us luck.

We need it.

It is amazing that you can strategize, plan, build infrastructure, do work, and create a stats based point of view and your fate and success can all rest on something as random as a ping pong ball going the right way. A high pick and a little luck and good player development is key in the NBA just as it is in the NHL.

Lebron. Duncan. Howard. Garnett (via trade). Kobe. Wade. Dirk. Durant.

All very high picks and all franchise changers.

In deference and respect to Mrs. Pollin and the Pollin family; we go to New Jersey and together we bring good karma and good mojo.

We want to build around young players, stock up on picks and prospects, and build a new core around young players. It would be helpful to get some positive luck going our way…starting tonight. It is a deep draft. We will be blessed to pick high. Watch on ESPN. Thank you.
