The Task is MONUMENTAL

Washington Sports and Entertainment and Lincoln Holdings have merged into a new corporate entity called MONUMENTAL Sports and Entertainment.

Monumental will be the new name for the holding company that owns and operates:

Owns…

The Washington Capitals

The Washington Wizards

The Washington Mystics

The Verizon Center

The local Ticketmaster franchise

Operates…

The Kettler Capitals Iceplex

The George Mason Patriot Center

And that programs and hosts the Georgetown University men’s basketball team

We will unveil logo and brand treatment and all related materials over the coming months. I also think Monumental Sports and Entertainment would make a great name for a broadcast, cable, or online network too, don’t you?

Some Clarity

Thanks for the nice words here. Sometimes I talk so much in these press conferences I don’t even remember what I said :-) . If I said these things and made these quotes good for me!

At the same time, the media sometimes garbles what I said or perhaps meant. So here is some clarity.

1. The overall deal is valued at $825 million. That is what the Monumental Sports and Entertainment combined entity is valued at all in one. Soon we hope to make the asset worth $1 billion, which would be a major milestone.

2. The Washington Sports and Entertainment assets valued at about $550 million. I am unclear where the AP wire service got a number of $310 million. That number is a bad one. It was never mentioned by me. If you can find me saying that number, please bring it to my attention. Thanks.

3. In regards to a name change of the team, we have a lot of work to do right now on re-crafting the team itself, focusing on the draft, our number 1 pick, free agency, selling season tickets, suites and club seats, new interactive outreach programs, working with customers, prospects and media, crafting a new organizational structure aimed at maximizing our services to customers, working on making the Verizon Center the best it can be for our community, and finding new and improved ways to serving our communities of interest.

The NBA also has a lot of work to do on negotiating a new CBA with the players and working with everyone on a new business model that is fair to all.

With all of that going on understanding that to effectuate a name change could take two to three years. This simply isn’t a priority for us right now. We can’t change the name of the team for next season. It is June and the new season starts in October. There will be no name change. We can’t change the name. It is pretty simple.

We can change the colors more easily than the name. We will look into that as part of an overall brand uplift and updating project. That could happen as soon as the following season, but NOTHING new can happen next season. It is too late in the off season to have any changes at all. I am sorry but schedules and production of materials etc. are set years ahead of time.

As time goes on and we meet our goals, we can look into every issue our fans have about our team, but to focus and discuss an issue that can’t be fixed in the short term is not a good decision by anyone. I am not tone deaf but I am a realist and we must focus on the immediate tasks at hand. I hope this clarifies the issues to you all and helps the anger I see in emails and blog post commentary subside a bit. We will listen. But vision and strategy without execution is hallucination!

An Email Test

Wow — I am happy and overwhelmed.

Yesterday was quite the busy day. I have been meeting with our combined employee base at all of the teams.

I watched some of a work out of some new prospects.

I held an all-hands meeting, then a press conference followed by a series of one-on-ones.

Then I came home, hung out with the family and started to read my email.

My Washington Capitals email inbox had more than 300 emails. I have read them all and responded to most to date. Thank you for noticing that we communicated to you all and remain committed to our shared goals.

But my new Wizards email inbox received more than 1,100 emails.

Wow!!!!!!!!

Today is another busy day, but I will start to dig in now with weekend free time and read every email and try to respond to all. I want to truly study these missives and get to know you all.

I am most appreciative. It is so nice of you to spend the time to communicate to us. Thank you.

Blackhawks Win – Bears Win

What a great night for hockey.

I was toggling between the Flyers vs. Blackhawks game and the Bears game as well last night.

Kudos to the Hershey Bears coming up big late in the game. John Carlson is clutch again. The series is now tied 2 to 2. One more game in Texas then back to Hershey.

Congratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks. They win the Stanley Cup. I am happy for them. I am sad for us and a bit angry that we let so many people down this playoff season. It is a good motivator for our franchise.

Chicago went almost 50 years without winning a Stanley Cup. Toughest trophy to win in sports!

We have miles to go before we sleep. Go Caps! Go Bears!

In an ironic twist of fate, I did the first interactive content deal with the NBA back at AOL in 1994. Does anyone remember AOL Keyword: NBA? :-)

My head is spinning and I am quite nervous and excited for today’s events.

First Day of the Rest of Our Lives

The Washington Wizards have passionate and interactive fans that is for sure. Thanks for the emails on my new email account set up for Wizards fans - Thewashwiz@aol.com.

I received more than 100 emails overnight. Thank you. I intend to listen. Thank you Michael for also socializing my account address.

Today at 11:00 am we will hold an All Hands meeting at Verizon Center. We will bring in all associates, partners and employees from the Verizon Center; Washington Capitals; Washington Mystics; Washington Wizards; Ticketmaster; Kettler Capitals Iceplex; and related entities.

We will all get a chance to meet, talk and get to know one another.

I intend to clearly lay out my vision and goals for the entire organization. We will then share them with everyone at a later date.
