Denmark — Saving Lives

Here is a wonderful film about the power of empathy, and how ordinary people can rise to the occasion and be considered heroes.

Watch “The Danish Solution.” A wonderful movie about how Denmark saved refugees during WW II.

This is a great example of “Filmanthropy” and why I am so proud to bring you all these films on Snagfilms.com. Beautiful people with a moving messages of hope and honor. Click here to watch.

An Important Effort

This summit about making “hockey players for life” is an important one for us for sure. It is noble and we need to make the game affordable and available to everyone, everywhere.

We are blessed that we work and play at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, and that we donate more than 1,000 hours of ice time to our community annually.

We, as a league and as leaders, also need to bring teaching skills and communications to the young people of the world via the media that they feel comfortable with. Hockey Night in Canada, and television in general is key in helping to continue to build the game. However, being the best, coolest, and most interactive sport and making our game available in a format and technology that young adults live on, is most important.

I am proud that the league is doing so much development in wireless, on iPhone-like apps, on the iPad and on other new formats such as 3D.

The physical world and availability is key, but augmenting bricks with clicks is equally as important to this next generation of player.

It is a new world. We must excel in the physical world and the cyber world to maintain the mind share and passion of the next generation!

Progress

I am down to my last 70 or so unread and unresponded to emails at Thewashwiz@aol.com. I promise to finish out the week having a totally clean and empty email in box.

So far I have responded to more than 2,000 emails. I must admit, the ones I haven’t responded to yet are the ones with resumes and requests for employment, internships or charitable requests, or requests to retain your firm in some capacity. I simply don’t have the bandwidth or capacity yet to deal with these demands and requests right now. For that I apologize, but I also ask you to have some empathy. Asking for a job, scholarship, charitable donations or consulting work when I haven’t even been in place for a week seems a bit over the top. So I will ask you all to show some patience of us all. Thank you.

Here is an additional list of 10 new complaints and ideas from our fans. As Kurt Cobain once sang “Hey wait — I got a new complaint”…

“I don’t like the cheerleader’s outfits and go-go boots — redo the outfits.”

“We need more local fare ala Ben’s Chili Bowl outlets at Verizon Center.”

“You need to create more sense of history at the arena. You would never know the Wizards were once the Bullets and had won a championship.”

“Where is the Georgetown support? More Hoya Saxa, everywhere.”

“Market more to local colleges. Have college themed nights.”

“Better radio programming please.”

“Why not an open Wiki on stats for fans?”

“Want to see Bullet players of old in the stands at games.”

“Cross market more between Mystics and Caps. Create ticket packages between the teams.”

“Make sure meters on the street are fixed so that you can buy 3 hours of time, so I don’t get a ticket if a game goes to OT.”

Keep those cards and letters coming folks. :-) I really appreciate it. I am almost done with this first batch of great input!

A Tiny Thrill

I went into my local Books-A-Million store in Mclean, Virginia over the weekend.

They had a book display up front that said “Best Father’s Day Gift ideas”… and the lead book they displayed was “The Business of Happiness.”

I was honored and the store manager came up to me and said “your book is still selling well. We sell 15 to 20 copies every week.”

Thank you all.

Here is the link for my book on Amazon.com.

Order the book as a gift today for Father’s Day. The book can be delivered on time.

All my proceeds from the book will be donated to the DC Central Kitchen charity here in Washington DC.

Systemic Excellence

Read this article about the Hershey Bears.

Historic. Wonderful. What a list of “wins.” 3 championships now as part of an affiliation with us in DC. They are the best of the best!

As articulated to everyone 5 years ago — rebuild the Washington Capitals in every fashion possible, create a new system and culture, affiliate with Hershey, build and manage the new Kettler Capitals Iceplex, re-launch the Capitals brand, build a new young core through the draft. And on and on.

Hershey is such a powerful partner to us, helping us to create a culture of winning expectations. Thank you so much. Click here to enjoy a bit of history.

Basketball is Basketball

That is the new WNBA campaign, and it shows great players in the NBA and WNBA — their moves, their productivity, and the stars that shine in each league.

We believe in the WNBA. We want it to succeed.

We are committed and we are making ongoing investments. We love the Washington Mystics.

But you have to do your part as well. Come out to the games. Help us by sponsoring the team and becoming a “net promoter.” We are in it together. We need your help and support. Click here to read a powerful piece about the WNBA. Thank you.

Wrong Redux — Sorry

I didn’t hire George Mcphee. Abe Pollin hired George Mcphee. I didn’t get lucky with that hire. We just articulated a plan together and stuck to it. We have created a system, a culture, and we have gotten the entire organization to believe in it.

And that is what we will do with the Wizards.

Manage. Measure. Improve. Create a plan, stick to it, and execute against it. Labor conquers all. Have belief. Be positive.

We are in it together. Thanks for playing devil’s advocate, but try to be happy. You can do it.
