Cooler Heads Usually Prevail

I thought this article was reasonable and rationale. Thank you. I agree with much, if not all of what is posted here.

I have received a couple or three personal attacking emails from deeply troubled people — from alleged fans who say the nastiest things about ethnicity, personal attacks about religion, race, and nationality. Truly despicable. And frankly cowardly too.

I have developed very tough skin of late. I just delete now and ignore, but it does surprise me the things that some people say, the racism that people show, the hate mongering and anger that lurks within some folks. Such is life. I will take the high road. I won’t respond.

  1. It sounds like the alleged fans have some degree of difficulty discerning the difference between life (which is important) and entertainment (which makes life more pleasurable). For the players, hockey is life – it’s how they earn their money and bang up their bodies which will affect the rest of their lives. For the owners, hockey is part of life – again, it affects their cash flow and their personal pride but, aside from money, it’s not like their ability to live comfortably is on the line (and if it is, they need to find a different line of work). For the fans, it’s entertainment. 82 games during the regular season and, hopefully, maybe 16 more wins in the post-season. It’s how we choose to spend our money and our time, but it shouldn’t affect our lives to the point where we have to verbally attack other individuals, be they fans, players or owners. Perspective is definitely needed by everyone to put things into their proper place. As a fan, I would love to see the Capitals hoist the Stanley Cup. That would give me a feeling of vindication for the hours and dollars I have invested in following the Capitals. But if they don’t, I’ve seen some amazing hockey over the past ten years and generally enjoyed myself (well, the post-lockout season wasn’t too much fun).

  2. Yes because this agrees with you it must be brilliant right? The people that just do not agree are morons of course. This is all fine and dandy right up until it matters in the playoff’s doesn’t it?

Any article that claims this current Caps team has guys on a third pairing that would be higher up on every other team does not understand this NHL. This is not the case at all. As a matter of fact our #1 line of Schultz and Green is a great example. Schulz would not make the first pairing of most teams in the NHL.

  3. That is just more resistance to evolution…imagine the halls of Ellis island. Trees may shake but the wind blows where nature chooses

  4. There are too many armchair team owners and armchair general managers, as well as armchair coaches, and with the Internet — especially Twitter, blogs, etc. — they all have a voice, sometimes a very loud and obnoxious voice at that. I don’t know how you can deal with the personal attacks, but I applaud your ability to do so.

  5. Ted,

While hockey fans (like myself) are desperately passionate about their teams, sometimes that passion is misguided and completely inappropriate. I can only hope those ‘fans’ wake up one day and regret everything they said. Very glad to hear you don’t let that garbage spoil the meal!

Stick to the plan and keep rocking the Red!

Sending love, affection and cheers from your Section 104 friends (and new Wizards fans!).
