The Times They Are A-Changing

Broadcast television ratings hit an all-time low last week. Read this article for the facts.

You would have thought that with the hot weather that people would be indoors in air conditioned environments watching MORE TV NOT less TV.

Viewers today are heavily distracted. The web; the hand help phenomenon; the sad state of television programming; and on and on. This trend will continue. Pre-programmed television is not as socially relevant to young consumers. Sports and big event TV still draws a big audience but traditional broadcast television and print media will continue to be marginalized.

Caps Fan Fest

This will be a busy week at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

I hope to see many of you here this week. Get out of the heat and enjoy the cool whiffs of hockey.

We have developmental camp and we have the Fan Fest all this week.

A fun time will be had by all. Click here for some details.

In some other news, we had less than 200 seats not be renewed this off season. Some folks tragically passed away; some people moved; and some didn’t renew for personal reasons.

We were at almost 98 percent renewal on season tickets. We have almost 2,000 people on our waiting list. We are doing our best to serve as many people as we can. We are now on the Top 5 teams in the NHL in terms of full season ticket holdings. We have come a long way. Thank you Caps fans.

Glad This Is All Behind Us Now

“The Three Kings.”

Wow! Really? Read this one. Is that a good nickname?

One championship between them. Three players. Twenty-one seasons. There is lots of pressure now on them to live up to the ongoing expectations and hype.

And The Washington Post thought we went overboard when we had a couple of hundred fans welcome John Wall to DC? :-)

Living up to expectations is difficult; we experienced that high and low last season with the Washington Capitals.

We had the most points in the NHL. We lost in the first round of the playoffs. It is a difficult process to win a title. There is no easy way. Time will tell if all the hoopla over the free agent signings lives up to expectations in both the NBA and the NHL. To say the team is capable of winning five, six and seven titles is really putting a bull’s eye on the back of a team and selected players.

Crafting a team in a cap system is equally hard.

See this article. This should all make for an interesting and exciting season in both the NBA and NHL. Can’t wait for the seasons to start.

I am psyched and nervous and can’t wait to put in the hard work to get our teams to where our fans expect them to be. Onward…

Vegas Baby – Vegas

I am on my way to Vegas to attend my first NBA Owners meeting on Monday and then follow that up by attending a summer league game later that night.

I look forward to seeing the kids play and to see our first round picks including John Wall in action.

I am also hoping that our Mr. McGee continues on his growth spurt. He is very athletic and he is developing a NBA body now. That is great news for our franchise. See article within.

Let the kids play.

And why not? I am surprised we are even playing 82 games next year. I thought the championship trophy was already awarded to a South East division foe. Have you ever seen such anticipation, excitement and hype?

Caps Fans — Count Our Blessings

Aren’t we all glad we drafted, developed, and retained our two-time MVP in Alex Ovechkin. He signed a 13 year extension. He didn’t want to test free agency. He loved our fans and our franchise. He showed respect and love to us and we reciprocated in kind.

Same with Nicklas Backstrom, who just signed a 10 year deal with us to be here during his key free agent years too.

Phew. What a relief. Fans can fall in love and stay in love with these players and our team for the long term. Our players showed commitment, respect, loyalty, and integrity to the fan base and our community. We are very grateful.

When I read some of the articles about the NBA free agency loss of players, I cringe.

I know it will happen to us one day. I don’t look forward to it. Click here to see a bunch of stories that will make your hair stand up. Wow.

So life goes on now in the NBA, and life goes on now in the NHL too. Back to work.

Fehr Signed — More Young Kids in Town

Hope. Promise. Come see the young kids at Kettler next week. Our future — they will be there.

It feels good to get restricted free agents signed without going to arbitration. It means these players believe we are fair in our negotiations, and that they want to be part of something with us together. Kudos to Jeff and Eric. Thank you. We look forward to seeing you develop and continue to be a big part of our franchise’s upside. Go Caps. And Caps fans. See you all next week. Come on out and have some fun. Free of charge to boot!

Why Let Facts Get in the Way of Madness?

This is a smart piece on the money.

Free agency and adding stars to a lineup does NOT guarantee a championship over night in the NBA. Perhaps in a Sony Playstation game it does, but not in real life. Read this one. Gulp. Reality and stats sometimes are scary, but hey, why do the research when it is more fun to just wish a championship home, right?

Not.

There is no magic wand to waive to win a trophy. I wish there were. I would try to buy one too if it came with a guarantee!
