Couldn’t disagree more, Bob. Great idea and GREAT timing. Kids now have access to Smart Boards, Promethean, and laptop computers at school. I can’t wait to implement some of these important cultural films in my fifth grade classroom and challenge other teachers to do the same. Just because kids have to pass the dreaded state-mandated tests doesn’t mean we have to teach to those tests or limit what we do above and beyond them in our classrooms. By enriching the curriculum with valuable resources and lessons, passing the minimum requirement assessments we have to administer becomes worry free!
What a great idea! What bad timing! Teachers now are faced with the prospect of cramming facts down kids throats so that they can pass a year end multi choice test. There is little time left for learning or thinking. It is strange to understand that “bad kids” often become interesting adults. That all kids don’t learn the same way and that no matter how many facts you know, your IPOD will be able to find more info in seconds. Public schools are tasks with turning out generalist in a specialist world, we stifle passion and try to force kids to cast a wide net, when as you know passion fuels creativity and success. Critical thinking is icing on the cake and frankly the cake is the entire emphasis of No Child Left Behind.
