Wizards Win – 3 and 1 in Preseason

A nice win last night and lots of players saw action.

We ran lots of looks. We played lots of combos. We ran the floor well. Our big men rebounded well.

As noted, we are long; fast; play with enthusiasm; and have good spot up jump shooters now.

It is just the preseason but repetition of a style of play is important. It builds the foundation upon which we can build.

We are also playing better defensively, too.

Small tiny steps to improvement. Small steps to changing a culture of being more enthusiastic on the court and playing with passion.

Capitals Season Ticket Holder Party Rescheduled

With a Nor’easter set to hit the area Thursday and the chance of rain at 70%, we have made the decision to reschedule the Capitals season-ticket holder party to Monday, Oct. 18, at Six Flags America. All of our season-ticket holders should receive an email about the change as well.

We’ve been blessed with great weather for this event the last few years, but the last thing we want is for our fans and players to be stuck in the rain for hours outdoors. We hope you understand the move and we apologize for any inconvenience.

One unfortunate effect of the move is that Alex Ovechkin and Semyon Varlamov will not be able to attend, as they will be in Bristol, Conn., filming a This is SportsCenter commercial. You’ve probably seen these ads – they’re very well done. We’ve been working with ESPN for a long time to get Alex in one of these spots, and it’s important that we keep this commitment. We hope you understand.

(And while I can’t give away the premise of the commercial, you won’t be disappointed – it will be great for Alex, Semyon and our team.)

The original tickets given to season-ticket holders for the party will still be honored on Monday. If you have given your tickets away please let the recipient know about the change.

Again, apologies for having to reschedule at this late date, but we hope this move is best for all involved. We hope to see you at Six Flags America on Monday.

“Twitter Will Get to a Billion Members”

I agree, it will.

The Internet remains the fastest growing medium ever. More than 2.2 billion people are on the Internet now and the growth is just off the chart outside of the United States. And most of the growth is in handhelds and mobile devices where the screen size is small. Twitter owns this concept of self-publishing and small burst text format that is very relevant to young adults and students. Google will get to a billion users. Facebook will get to a billion users. And Twitter will get to a billion users.

I used to forecast that “who ever gets to a billion users first wins.”

I think these three companies win.

Gulp: SI the Magazine

I received in the mail yesterday my Sports Illustrated magazine. I am a long term subscriber. The cover date is October 11.

On the cover was Oktoberfest and a story about the MLB playoffs with predictions.

Of course, the playoffs are already completed with Texas just beating Tampa last night. I won’t read that big set of articles now. Old, old news.

There is the obligatory Mickey Mantle story within with sepia-tinged pages and black and white photos. People who know of Mickey Mantle – like me - are all old and dying off! He was a star when I was born. I loved Mantle. I won’t read this article which is a take off on a new book.
There were by my count 20 pages of ads in a 72 page format. That isn’t a healthy ratio.

Can this magazine make it?

I will continue to subscribe out of loyalty and muscle memory.

But the magazine is mispositioned. It can’t break news. Thank goodness for SI.com. It writes long stories that are nostalgia-tinged to a smaller and smaller group of people.

Take note: More photos; more short stories; more integrated pieces from print to video to web – craft and produce; and work on more iPad and iPhone apps that are local and resident on my screen when I am watching games via Slingbox or other means.

Do something. Save this magazine. It is important to so many of us! :-)

Tonight

All in Red. See you tonight at Verizon Center.

Home game number #3 against the Islanders.

We have a lot of depth and we shall need it. We are already dinged up playing our 4th game in six nights.

Here is a nice little group of links prepared by Japers’ Rink. They do it so you don’t have to and I enjoy reading these sub headings very much.

Thanks for the ongoing support fans and thanks for the emails. Go Caps!

Yi Was Taking a Photo

Yi took lots and lots of photos. He was quite engaged in the game. He was touched by the fan’s reception of him. He asked a lot of questions about the game. He mingled with our partners and friends and family. He met Senator Mark Warner. He met the head of Comcast SportsNet. He had a great time. He spoke in beautifully constructed English full sentences. He is a very curious, smart and respectful individual. I was very impressed with him. You will be, too.
