Caps Now 7-1 at Home

Yesterday was a good win over the very tough and very talented Philadelphia Flyers team.

We are now 10-4 with 20 points. We are tied with the Flyers for most points in the East although they have played one more game than we have. We are tied for most points in the NHL with LA although they have only played 13 games to our 14 games.

We have a really terrific home record now at 7-1. Thanks to our fan base for urging our team on to victory after victory.

We played tough even though we played short-handed. Kudos to our really young goaltender making his first NHL start. Varlamov. Neuvirth. Holtby. You can say our future is bright in goal.

I am proud of the team. We played quite productively this weekend winning two games over Boston and Philadelphia, two of the best teams in the league.

Now on to NYC and the New York Rangers then back home to face the red hot Tampa Bay Lightning. No rest for the weary. Thank you. Go Caps!

One of the Games We Should Have Won

It is always nice but also it is necessary to win your games at home.

Winning at home builds confidence.

Winning at home helps the fans feel comfortable with the progress of the team.

Last night was a good game with good runs but we didn’t close it out and we lost. Hence we are now 1 and 4.

We lost back to back games this weekend. Both games were competitive and close but we don’t grade for effort in pro sports. It is outcomes that matter.

That being said, I am happy with our progress. The coach is playing lots of players now. Gilbert Arenas is getting back into shape and is getting playing time. Next up will be Josh Howard and then we will have our full compliment of players. We can build out minutes for everyone and the coach can have a full rotation of players and every player will know their role.

It is funny how little things really add up in pro sports. We didn’t get to the foul line enough last night. We didn’t box out on a free throw and a one point play turns into a four point play against us. That one stat – and one play - was the difference between winning and losing last night.

Attention to detail comes with repetition and with getting to know your teammates. And it also comes with experience. We are a bit careless with the ball sometimes and turnovers at the wrong time in the game can be lethal.

I think we have been in every game since the opening night blow out loss. We are making progress. We are starting to build an identity. We have a million miles left on the journey. I am not surprised at what I am seeing. I signed up for this. I enjoyed the game. I see in the players’ eyes that they think they have upside and can and will improve.

Keep the faith. Don’t lose sight of the big picture. Thank you.

A Big Win Against a Tough Team

We are now tied for first in the entire NHL with 18 standings points. We are first in the Eastern Conference.

We lead the NHL in goals scored with 44. We are middle of the pack with goals allowed with 32 for 13th in the NHL. But we are second best in the NHL in positive goal differential with a plus 12.

Over our last 10 games, we are 7-3 tied for the second best run in the league. LA is 8 and 2.

Boston is really a well constructed team. Great goaltending and great defensively. Big and tough. Somehow we were able to hang on and score five goals against them. I am grateful. I thought our coach made some subtle changes and a big bold move in replacing our goaltender yesterday that worked out quite well.

Now we play the other monster team in the East - the Flyers - on Sunday at Verizon Center.

They are also on quite the run. They went to the Stanley Cup Finals last season. They are talented and respected. They are in second place in the East right now. This has been a tough weekend of games.

We are hopeful we can remain competitive with these great teams. We are humble as we know we aren’t playing our best, yet. Go Caps!

Gilbert’s Back But We Lost

One step forward – one step back.

We have an opportunity to atone tonight at 7:00 pm against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Back to back games are tough but it offers us an opportunity to regroup quickly.

Our coach now has more options and can manage minutes more efficiently.

Gilbert is a natural scorer and will help us offensively out of the gate.

I am happy to see him back on the court and smiling.

I am sure our fans will re-embrace Gilbert, too, tonight as he helps us to improve the team and accelerate our success with our rebuild. He is a fine teammate and is highly regarded by his teammates. His on court presence will now be felt positively by us all. I will be up and cheering tonight when he enters the game.

See you all tonight-. We have a chance to get well with home cooking.

Ted X Mid Atlantic

It was wonderful to see some many friends in DC yesterday at the Ted X Conference. I am always honored to attend and to speak at these events.

The theater across from Verizon Center is world class and to co-mingle Ted X attendees and then 20,000 red clad Caps fans was a fun sight!

Here is a quick slide of me on stage giving a speech. Thanks for coming and Go Caps!
