We worked hard for one standing point, didn’t we?We had to kill off two 4 minute power plays.
We were in the penalty box for too long all night.
Our coach juggled the lines and tried to adapt in a million different ways. Thank goodness – as Buffalo played with desperation and with determination.
We played an NHL professional road game; get the point; try to win in OT; and it took a magnificent play by a terrific goal scorer to end the game in OT.
We remain in first place in the NHL in terms of points. So it is hard to complain, although some people do. As is their right.
We now play today at 5:00 pm – 22 hours after we started yesterday’s game. Same with Atlanta – both teams arriving into DC very late last night to play again today. Tough schedule. It is what it is. See you all later today at Verizon Center.
I ended up watching both the Caps and Wizards on television last night as both teams were on the road. I had picture in picture going. It worked pretty well. Trust me though – you don’t get a lot of sleep when both teams lose on the road at the same time. I look forward to when both teams can win on the road on the same night. I bet I will sleep like a baby! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
As noted, we are rebuilding our team and a big part of that process is building an identity.
And a culture of playing tough and not quitting and hanging together.
These small steps are a big part of creating a culture of winning and of teamwork.
We are taking steps towards success even though we are losing games.
Back to back tough games – both loses. But we see signs of improvement. We see players trying to overcome injuries and big deficits on the scoreboard. The players are playing for each other and for the coach. They like each other. They respect the coach. They want to win but they also want to become a team.
I know this process is difficult but we are playing better as a team. Gilbert is now contributing and is a part of the rotation. Soon Josh Howard will be back. We will learn how to play together with a full compliment of players.
Our younger players will also start to get minutes.
It is a long season – a season that will be filled with angst but also with positive steps forward.
We do need to attack the rim and get to the foul line more. That is based on effort and good health. It will come.
Keep the faith. There is a lot to like about this team. We will improve. We will invest as time goes by to get the team over the hump but right now the best investment we can make is time and patience for the young players and the team to create its identity. Thank you.

Three All-Star candidates on our team.
Four on the Maple Leafs.
Go figure.
Alex Semin is playing like an All-Star. He deserves the recognition. Thank you. Click here to see the list.
We didn’t get to the free throw line enough. We didn’t rebound well.
We were thin as players went down with injury.
Some players are working hard to get their timing back and just aren’t hitting their shots.
We couldn’t overcome an odd call or two.
Frankly we aren’t good enough or deep enough yet to overcome the little things. Hence a loss last night.
While frustrating, we are in these games. When we lose now, it is because of little things. We are competitive. We need to learn to punch above our weight class and rebound better. Statistically that is the great differential for us now between success and failure. And if our big men go hard to the rim, they will go to the foul line. Life will be easier.
Live and learn. Growing pains.
These are games in the future that we will get a win – at least that is the plan.
Onward. Back to back in Chicago.

OK – it is mainstream now which means it isn’t hip so it shall dissipate. It has officially “jumped the shark.” We drew less than 15,000 last night as well.
We have a long way to go to sell out a game. Will we sell one out before the Dougie goes stale?
