For Those of You Who Stayed Up Late

That was like old times, huh?

Thirteen goals scored. We got 7 of them and a win and 2 points.

We never quit. We kept driving to the net and shooting the puck.

Of course it didn’t feel like a playoff game and we can’t afford to fall into bad habits and rely on scoring and opening it up to win games. But for the time being, the game was fun. It was exciting and we get a much needed road win.

We have 70 points. We are 10 points ahead of the 9th place team in the East. There are 24 games left and another road game against San Jose tonight. Now that is a tough schedule! As odd as it seems, 70 points qualifies the team as having the 6th best record as to points in the entire NHL. Sure doesn’t feel like that though, does it?

We got scoring from our second line. Welcome back Alex Semin. You were missed. Thanks Brooks. Nice goal. Nice touch.

We grinded out some goals. Way to go David. And our first line scored 2 goals, too. Thanks Alex Ovechkin – spectacular. And Mike Knuble. Way to go. Just like old times. John Erskine – most appreciated.

We obviously miss Mike Green, Tom Poti and Eric Fehr still.

It is great to get Alex Semin back. Scoring a hat trick and joining the 20+ goal club again.

I also know a few of you were up late as you were sending me emails, mean-spirited in real time, as the game went back and forth. Is that really necessary?

It is the height of hypocrisy to opine during the game with conviction and then NOT to offer an apology post game when the game turned into a win. You lose all credibility acting the way you do. Must have been tough to get to sleep, huh? :-)

Go Caps! Onward. Thank you.

Spin, Spin, Spin

I usually don’t react to comments on my blog.

But I do not appreciate it when people just kinda spew stuff without facts.

The Capitals are 17-2-4 when we score a goal on the power play.

We are 12-16-6 when we don’t.

Now we have a lot of work to do. I admit that.

But fixing the power play would seem to be a pretty big deliverable. And it isn’t spin to say that is why we aren’t being as successful this year in terms of gaining standings points. We have lost so many games in OT and shootouts as well.

And my goals for the team haven’t changed at all. We all want to win a Cup. Every owner sets that as his or her goal but you have to make the playoffs first. That is job one and it isn’t handed to you as we all know. The regular season matters. Twenty-nine other teams are trying to win a Cup. You never heard me say the regular season doesn’t matter. In fact, I was always concerned and offended by that notion. Now every game matters. A loss two months ago is still a lost opportunity to gain standings points. That is exactly the point. Every game matters and every goal matters. Glad we got that out of the way!

“Twitter is Dangerous”

THAT was an understatement. As someone who blogs and has to talk to the press all of the time, I understand about gaffes. And saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. It happens. Mea culpa.

But still. This was just mean-spirited and not necessary and not nice. And he paid a price. Lesson here: Think before you hit send! Read this one on Gawker.com.

Kudos to the team. SnagFilms is a great example of a double bottom line business, doing well by doing good. I am proud.

In the Midst of Adversity

Here is a good piece on the Capitals in the midst of a tough road trip with back-to-back games starting tonight in Anaheim.

Dealing with injuries and self doubt. As many of you have noted, it is time for our leaders to lead and for our best players to step up with 50+ standings points left on the table.

We are still in the qualifying for the playoff race but we are all aware that we aren’t playing to our capabilities. Those OT losses and shootout losses where we left so many points on the table are hurting us right now. We have changed our system. We are playing strong defense. We are killing penalties well but of course we are struggling with offense and we are really struggling on our power play. The change in system is a necessary one but has come with a price. We all see it and know it. Change is good but it has been painful. We hear you. We understand.

We all must focus on the signal right now. We can’t deal with noise.

I appreciate your emails, message board posts, suggestions and recommendations. Let us hope we raise our game; score on the power play; and win in OT when it gets to OT. We need points right now. We need wins. We need to rebuild our confidence and get our swagger back. Confidence, momentum and leaning in seem to be important for our team dynamics and collective productivity.

The focus needs to be on a game-by-game basis. Tonight’s game is important. Last game was important. The next game is important. Every game and every point is important. The notion that nothing matters but the playoffs is a long forgotten point of view. Wish us well.

They Scored on Their Power Play

We didn’t score on our power play. We had 5 chances. We were 0-5.

And that was the game.

Pure and simple.

It is incomprehensible that we are struggling this badly on the power play. We obviously have work to do. Hard work will overcome what ails us. To lose 3-2 on the road after driving to the net; drawing power play chances; and not finishing is frustrating to us all.

We can’t whine. We have back-to-back games on Wednesday and Thursday. Time to double down on work ethic and hope the power play gets back on track.
