Proud Hoya

That was a fun game and an impressive showing against the #1 seed UConn Huskies. A win would have been of historic upset proportions. We played hard. We played smart. We came up just a bit short. Read this one please.

The Georgetown Woman’s basketball program is now firmly established. It will continue to grow and develop. The lacrosse program has become world class as has soccer, track and field and sailing along with men’s basketball.

Academics rule at Georgetown but athletics on a nationally ranked scale are important as well. We balance the priorities well. Hoya Saxa.

A Gentle Groupon Reality Check

There is no one I respect more in the tech industry than Esther Dyson. She is smart and experienced and fair and analytic. Esther and I go back a long time to the PC and software worlds of the 80′s. I like her and respect her very much.

But on this one I do have to say, “Not so fast, please.”

There is so much that is reported on Groupon of late, speculated and opined on. Most of it is from people far removed from the day to day reality of the company. Groupon is a private company. It is a company that has created a new category. It is well positioned in the local e-commerce space. It is the “Fastest Growing Company Ever” as Forbes has reported. It is also the company that has the most copycats and clones ever as well.

It is innovative; it is fun to use; and it is a nice company. And its products and services work well for everyone. That is why it is so successful and liked and respected.

Doing to Others What Others Do to You

A nice 2-0 win last night in Montreal.

A day after we lost 2-0 in Ottawa.

We certainly have learned how to clog up that neutral zone; block shots; and play in tight games. When we get good goaltending – which is quite often now – we seem to be in every game.

Strong penalty killing; staying out of the box; great goaltending; and disciplined team defense.

Is that the Washington Capitals we are talking about? Why yes it is. Haters go and hate! :-) We have 98 points.

Six games left in this grind it out of a season.

A successful road trip ended and two weeks away from home. We were very productive. I am happy and proud. Enjoy a few days off. See you all on Tuesday at Verizon Center. Go Caps!

We lost 2-0.

We play tonight in Montreal. Back to back.

The grind continues.

Expect more tough low scoring games from here on out.

Even though court stenographer Dan Steinberg disagrees, losing key players is tough on a team and its offense. I, too, am shocked at how many shutouts we have experienced this season. The Washington Post lost George Solomon, Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon to retirement and free agency and the sports department hasn’t been the same since – not as many points on the board – but they have lost about the same amount of people as most newspapers these days. Rim shot.

Go Caps!

Grind Continues

Wish us well this weekend in Canada. Two games in two nights.

Try to be happy. You can do it.

We clinched a playoff spot. Many of our players get a chance to heal up in the next three weeks or so before the playoffs begin.

We are 2nd in the East for now. We are 3rd in the NHL for now.

But to be honest, all we want to do is get healthy and play good hockey from here on out.

There is a lot of negativity in the blogosphere and in my emails and blog comments right now. I am not sure why. It is probably more about “you” right now than “us.”

We have met one of our first goals of each and every season, clinching a play off spot. It is OK to feel positive for a minute or two. Only three teams in the NHL right now can breathe that sigh of relief.

Onward. Go Caps!

Thanks, I Think

Yes, the draft is important and that is why we will have two first round picks this off season. And yes, we will all hope we will draft the right players at whatever number picks we do receive. And yes, we have been restocking via trades to get young players as prospects to add to the cast for coming seasons. I am sorry if you are bored now with the narrative.

I heard similar arguments about the Caps and how we didn’t know how to draft well and develop well. All it took was an organizational commitment to the plan; dedication; investment and confidence in what we were doing and now the Caps are looked at as one of the best teams in the league in terms of identifying, drafting, developing and retaining our young players. I know it can be done. We have done it here in the NHL.

But do you know what the new rules – if any – in the NBA will be? What will be the laws of unintended consequence?

The NHL looked very different before and after our rebuild time period.

There were new rules as to player compensation and to competition rules.

Being able to adapt and plan and have “optionality” for a new world order could also be of paramount importance.

There is never one thing that defines a change in culture or a change in systems or strategy. It isn’t as easy as writing a provocative headline.

For the Capitals it was a rebuild – a core of young players; adding even more prospects; developing a system for the players; developing a system and partnership with the Hershey Bears; and developing the Kettler Capitals Iceplex. It wasn’t about drafting Nicklas Backstrom in the second draft year of the rebuild although that helped a lot, too.

It isn’t one thing. It is everything.

Thanks.
