Treasures Across The Street

So today I went across the street from Verizon Center to tour the National Portrait Gallery. What a magnificent building; with such great treasures within.

A fantastic atrium; wonderful and interesting architecture and one of kind items such as human masks of Abraham Lincoln; Edison’s inventions and portraits; a life- size portrait of George Washington, Katherine Hepburn’s portrait and her 4 Academy Awards – great galleries of all of our President’s photos – sports figures – and so much more. They have a beautiful portrait of Eunice Shriver too that was meaningful to me to see.

It is open at 11:30AM to 7:00PM every day and is free to the public. Go check it out some time. We are so fortunate to live in such a fantastic setting. I have walked by that building a million times and today was the first time I ever went deep within. I will go back and spend many hours there it is that cool of a place to explore.

So Happy for the Washington Nationals

So happy for the fans.

The Nationals have built the team the right way.

In the next few years. They will become the team to beat in the East; they are young; loaded with talent and with great young pitching. Dynamic young stars; and they will be a great team for a long time as well; is my prediction. This is gonna be fun being a season ticket holder.

Next Tuesday, DC will be rocking as it awaits the return of Stephen Strasburg. It will be electric as he strides back to the mound for the first time this season. We all can’t wait.

Founder Led Companies

I agree with the premise of this article very much.

Founder led companies do better than “professionally managed” companies.

As I have noted as an investor and as a part of senior executive teams, great break out companies need the strong point of view and strength of will and an innate sense of what to do authentically that usually only founders can provide. Founders almost always have the best interest of the company and its customers in mind.

Great founder – great company – great value.

Love the founders; keep them in place and build the teams around them!

CBS Sports on Contenders

I am very proud that the Washington Capitals are mentioned in the same breathe as some great organizations. This article is self-evident on the progress we have all made together; so I am grateful to our fans and to our team management, coaches, staff and players for our progress to date.

We have worked very hard to make our franchise a team that matters and to create a hockey affinity in our market. We have invested and spent money and time and effort all to try and make our fans happy and to build a winning franchise here in the DMV. We have much work left to do – but I see progress all around as do people in the media and while we are all focused on much bigger deliverables than good press– reading this one- at this time in the off season- was a pleasant surprise.

When I read that we are a great hockey town; that free agents want to play here; that we have sound infrastructure – a good plan; that we invest and spend to keep winning; it reminds me of how we are all in this together and I wanted to say thank you and Let’s Go Caps!

Read this one if you have a free moment; thanks again.

We Lost a Beloved Partner

Monumental Sports and Entertainment is sad to report the passing of Albert H. Cohen. He was 89 years old.

Mr. Cohen was a great friend of the Pollin family and was a partner in Abe’s sports partnership for many years. When we consolidated the holdings last year at Monumental Sports and Entertainment. Mr. Cohen requested to stay in our partnership; he loved the teams and he attended just about every Caps and Wizards game last season.

He was a joy to be around. He was a giant in business and in sports. And local politics. He was always upbeat and he was a wise counsel to us all.

He was beloved by the community and his family is bedrock in Maryland.

Here is the obituary and visitation information.

Rest in peace Big Al – we will have a tribute to him during this next season; our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family.
