Going Old School

Rivals.

6 times each we shall play.

Like the old days– The “Patrick” division days. Now it is called a Conference instead.

Tough competition.

Short and easier travel schedules.

Lots of fan interest.

Tough to make the playoffs. Tough road once you do qualify for the playoffs.

Change is good.

This will be good and positive for the game.

Many of you asked for it - you got it.

The two great tragedies in life – “Not getting what you want and getting what you want”.

Thank you.

The Road Not Taken

A poor performance for us last night.

Against the team ahead of us in the standings in our division.

We are zero for forever on the power play.

But we took a million penalties last night and the Panthers scored 3 times on their power play. So we have that going for us.

This blog post says it all about our road woes.

We are shorthanded- we lack confidence still. We lose concentration and allow a team to score two goals in a row in a 15 second span.

We need to continue to regroup and focus and play as a team; with dedication to a system.

Usually when you score 4 goals you win a game.

We lost 5 to 4.

Onward to better days .

Verizon Center is 14 Years Old – Some Amazing Stats

Let us NOT take it for granted and all that it means to our fans and the community we serve. We are in it together and we are not alone in our work here in Penn Quarter but we were catalytic in jump starting this rebirth of a great community.

We generated $100 million in taxes and we generated a cumulative tax base within a seven block radius of the arena of $2.48 billion from 1995 to 2011. This is an economic engine for our community.

We also helped to spark within that same seven block radius – $6.8 BILLION of redevelopment.

That total community created more than 48,000 jobs since the arena broke ground.

And the arena helped Metro to increase its ridership by more than 20 million people.

We have hosted at Verizon Center more than 32 million people at events since the grand opening by hosting 2,890 total events!

We have hosted more than 650 sell outs in that time frame.

Concerts. The Circus. Caps and Wizards and Mystics games. NCAA games. Georgetown Men’s Basketball. The Dalai Lama. The list goes on and on.We drive people to our arena and then they eat and drink and visit local sites. They shop locally.

We are a part of your life.

Verizon Center is owned and operated by Monumental Sports and Entertainment. Thank you for coming out and supporting us.

Fidel Castro

His life and times.

Watch the film. Watch the beginning and the narrative of his letter written to our President as a 14-year-old boy. That very letter is presently in our National Archives. I have seen it with my own two eyes.

This is an important film. Castro has been a part of our lives and political landscape forever!

A good film for a lazy Sunday on SnagFilms.com. Thank you. Click here to watch and learn.

Happy for Hunter

An OT win for Coach Dale Hunter! His first win.

We play a different kind of man-on-man style on defense now. It is very different than past schemas. It is an honest and very athletic way to play. The forecheck is more focused and we hope to generate scoring chances off of turnovers. It is a more grinding kind of style.

We make some big hits to generate turnovers and to generate a transition game. It is a fun way to play for a team that is big, heavy and fast. I know our fans will grow to appreciate this system.

We finally generated shots on goal, 5 on 5.

We must capitalize on our power plays. That is a big priority for us as a team.

We get an OT win and two points. It sure seemed like a long time since we got our last win. We are grateful. May this be the first of many wins for our new Coach and his staff.

We are off on a road trip now. Lots of work to do. Baby steps on improvement. We won’t look at the standings. We are focused on incremental improvement and regaining confidence and momentum. Thank you for coming to the game last night. Go Caps!

New Wizards Season

This will be an interesting new season.

Sixty-six games in a very short and compressed time frame.

I am hopeful that youth will be served and that young legs will prevail. That passion, speed and youth will be well served.

I want to continue to be transparent with everyone.

We are in year two of a rebuild. We must be straightforward and unabashed in that communication to all. It is no secret. It is a strategy to embrace and develop and keep at it so that it works.

We believe we had a very good draft this off season. We had a very good draft the off season before. It is imperative for us to play the young players and see what they can contribute.

We have a few seasoned vets. They must step up their game now too and embrace the new kids on the block.

We have one of if not the youngest teams in the league.

We want to continue to have upside, play hard, develop chemistry, be “coachable”, and adhere to systems and to learn and to gain valuable experience.

When the time is right we will be aggressive to add to our roster. We won’t be shy.

We have a wonderful city to live in. We have a growing fan base. Thank you all. We have a dynamic roster of young talent. We will continue to adhere to our plan.

Our coach is wise and experienced and excited. Read this one.We are all in it together. Come on out and enjoy the new team, its young roster and NBA action. Stay tuned for details on our new schedule. Lots of games a-coming! Thank you.

Evolution

Change.

We all experience it. Our team needed it.

Now the question is – can we adapt? Can we morph and play a mature and sound defensive game, keep our energy levels high and start to take shots on goal and score?

I believe we can.

We will learn the system. The players will adapt and learn to trust. We have talent, size, high hockey IQ and will. We now need some positive reinforcement and the confidence that comes from success. Momentum then will be next.

Wish us well hopefully starting this evening. Here is a good article on what our coaching staff is doing to implement change. Thank you. Go Caps!
