Sweet Lou…Dobbs

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

I was on the Lou Dobbs radio show yesterday. We had a great time on air. He is very relaxed and sure made me feel comfortable. He had me on for more than 20 minutes talking about business and my new book.

His show is syndicated into 200 markets and he has more than 5 million listeners. I really enjoyed the session and the interviews.

Lou Dobbs was even nice to enough to recommend my book on his website. Thanks Lou.

I also did a bunch of other interviews and even conducted three of them for XM radio NHL Live; for the NHL.com folks; and for the NHL channel as well - all in the NHL store that is chock full of Washington Caps gear and photos of Alex Ovechkin. It felt like home away from home.

Gulp. Just Gulp.

Once the omelet is made, it is hard to put the eggs back together.

Check out this article regarding Newsday, the local newspaper on Long Island, and how it went from a free to paid subscription model on the web.

To date, this report says they have attracted 35 paying subscribers in 90 days generating $9,000 in new revenues but their web traffic is plummeting which will certainly detract from ad revenues.

The switch from free to paid will be a very tough nut to crack. It is hard to compete with “free and better.” Gulp. Just gulp.

A Good One on Caps and Blogosphere

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

I agree. I really do. It isn’t a coincidence that our team success and our off ice success meshed so well with the expansion of alternative media and the blogosphere.

The winning formula and the magic sauce included all of the above. Read this article from The Huffington Post.

Whomp - There It Is, Whomp - There It Is

Here is a provocative story. What do you think?

I think as media and interactive programmers you should go to where the puck will be and not where the puck is. That is how you score goals!

Brooklyn Boyz

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

I had an amazing reawakening experience yesterday; hear me out — so CAA represents me on some film producing activities; and has been very helpful to me on my film, Nanking.

An agent there sent me an email saying that an individual producer — writer — director — they also represent stated that he grew up with me in Brooklyn NY; that we played basketball together and attended the same church as me and that he wanted to reconnect.

The individual’s name is James Manos, Jr.. Click here for the Wikipedia entry on him and his career.

Tough Call

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

The Washington Capitals are leaders in building a big tent for new media. We want as many people and sources to cover us as possible. I just saw an interview with Ron Wilson, our former coach, on the NHL channel where he was bemoaning that while he was coach in DC, at some games, there were only one or two reporters covering the team.

Today after some games, we can have more than 100 people covering our team. The proliferation of media is exemplified right there and most of the new sources are based on the web and are bloggers, portals and folks who are part of new media networks.

We believe the more tagged content about us out feeding the algorithms in the sky, the better for us. The more pixels generated, the better for our fans, our franchise and our business, too.

New media school with Nick O’Neill. This is a very clever idea and one I am glad to help out on by spreading the gospel of new media to the masses. Click here to read about this new online self help program.

Washington Post Company Well Managed in Down Period

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Here is the Washington Post on the Washington Post in a very straightforward and concise article about its financial condition and results. Click here to read this piece. Well done Frank Ahrens.

It is interesting to note that the newspaper itself is now such a small part of the revenues of the company with Kaplan now representing 58 percent of the company’s revenues for the quarter. The actual newspaper itself continued to shrink in terms of ad sales, circulation and people. It continues to lose lots of money but less than last quarter. The Washington Post newspaper itself now represents only 15 percent of company revenues.
