Now it can be told

Bill Simmons – of Grantland and ESPN fame – once worked for someone – who worked for someone who – worked for someone who worked for someone who worked for me at Aol.

I was one of the co-founders of Aol’s Digital City – Bob Smith and Paul DeBenedictus helped to create it – we opened a city operation in Boston – and Bill Simmons wrote a clever little column about Boston sports. He was a talent; very ambitious and quite a good writer.

He got his start as did many other bloggers at Aol; back in the day.

That is the history – Bill was discovered by Aol.

Bet you didn’t know that?

RIP Bingham Ray

The indy film world lost a giant in the passing of Bingham Ray.

He suffered a series of strokes at the Sundance Film Festival last week

and he passed away yesterday; our thoughts and prayers go out to his family

and friends.

Bingham was a consultant to us at SnagFilms and Indie wire. He attended some

of our board meetings; he was a very nice man; creative – enthusiastic and

beloved in the industry.

See this article about his life and times and the comments from people

around the industry in tribute to his career – also quoted is Rick Allen – our

CEO of SnagFilms. Thank you.

Skyrockets and Trailblazers

This is a great documentary on space exploration. And the Space Shuttle and our quest for knowledge about our universe. On SnagFilms.com.

My family and I had the great pleasure to spend some time this holiday season with a true Trailblazer-Charles Simonyi, and his family. He is a member of the most exclusive club; one of 500 people who have been to space and he has done it twice - and as a civilian!

Charles was an early on exec at Microsoft; is today founder of his own software company; is a noted philanthropist; and trained and went into space and worked on the crew for the Space Station.

He showed us his personal videos of his flights – his training and his lift off and reentry back from space; it was truly breathtaking; and his description and storytelling concerning his flights were mesmerizing.

Charles is a great man; brave – and is historic – he was the 5th space tourist and is the greatest evangelist for our continuing investment in learning and seeking the answers to the big questions. “Why are we here and are we alone in the universe?”

Watch this film.

Respect what Charles Simonyi is all about; what a great American success story – click here to read his bio and his story. Thank you.
