“Capturing the Friedmans” and SnagFilms

SnagFilms today announced it had acquired the digital rights to one of the most important documentary films ever produced, Capturing the Friedmans.

Directed by Andrew Jarecki, this film has achieved iconic status and will be rolled out via SnagFilm’s digital PPV partner network, then on Subscription Video On Demand platforms and then on the SnagFilms website and network.

More importantly, Andrew Jarecki will be updating the film with new footage; new updated information and a series of new interviews that promises to add perspective to this family drama and continue to make the themes discussed in the film timely and relevant.

I am very excited and proud of this development for SnagFilms. I think this film is one of the greatest and most compelling films ever made. We Are All Connected

Everything is connected.

So I go to see Caps rookie camp - by myself - on Sunday and I return and tell my wife (who is Swedish) about the kids from Sweden. We talk about Sweden and the talk leads to discussion about her grandmother.

We then go to the movies and we see the movie The American starring George Clooney. The film opens in Dalarna, Sweden! That is my wife’s family’s hometown. How coincidental and random is that? My wife’s grandmother came to America from Dalarna.

Before the film, there are two movie trailers. One is for Catfish, a film produced by a close friend named Andrew Jarecki. The film starts showing reviewer comments and one is from indieWIRE which I acquired and am majority owner. Who knew? I didn’t.

The second trailer is for the Facebook-based movie and I swear I get total deja vu about AOL and our work on You’ve Got Mail, the film starring Tom Hanks.

Only we liked You’ve Got Mail and by the looks of the trailer my bet is Facebook won’t be loving this new film.

Wonder if Facebook will promote or take ad media dollars regarding this film from the studio? This will be interesting to see.

Andrew Jarecki Does It Again

Andrew Jarecki produced a new documentary called Catfish which premiered to great reviews at the Sundance Film Festival. Ironically on my Facebook newsfeed this morning there was a review - a glowingly positive one - from a friend who saw the film at Sundance. Considering the film is based on virtual friendships, I thought you would enjoy this review from Variety.

Andrew produced and directed Capturing the Friedmans; was founder of Moviefone; and has just completed his first full length feature film which I will discuss at another time.

Welcome back Andrew. Way to go!
