Happy Anniversary Apple Store

Ten years ago.

The first store in the 300 store chain opened here in Tysons Corner, Virginia.

I remember walking in that first weekend pre-iPod and pre-iPad thinking “really – will this work?”

Wow – was I wrong! And now I go to the Apple Store in Tysons or in Georgetown or Bethesda with regularity.

Here is a demo of the store from May of 2001 with Steve Jobs. An amazing run!

Welcome to Macintosh

Here is a fun film for MacHeads to enjoy.

I worked on the launch of the Mac back in 1983 and 1984.

It is amazing to me how time flies when you are having fun.

I think I received one of the first 100 Mac’s ever made and it is in an attic somewhere. I bet it will be worthy of being a collector’s item at some point in the future. What a great ride. Watch and have fun.

Utilities Matter

Utilities make the money.

It is better to be “needed” than “loved.”

Apple is the only company on this list that is loved and generates huge profits. It is one of a kind.

Microsoft, like Exxon Mobil, is a big utility company.

Check out the profits projected for this year.

Amazing too that BOTH Microsoft and Apple generate more profits than Wal-Mart.

Also amazing that a few banks have broken out and used the meltdown to make scale work for them as to profitability.

This is an interesting list of very profitable companies. Being needed is better than being loved when it comes to profits.

I Have Been in Meetings Where Steve Jobs…

  • Discussed and asked questions about the clay content in paper from a supplier in Italy.
  • He asked about thread count.
  • Where he knew more about the type face and kerning than our production heads.
  • He pulled out a loop to review the layout.
  • Where he understood the process involved around the seven colors and spot varnish treatment around the Apple logo.
  • Literally stared at a printed page for minutes and minutes getting a feel for what a laser printer output page would look and feel like to a consumer.

And this was in a set of meetings almost 20 years ago! Steve loves his products. He loves the process. He is meticulous and always has been.

Click here to read this interesting article. He has built the most valuable and beloved company in technology!

People that love their products and care about customers think and act this way. They are relentless.

Don’t make fun of my obsession over ketchup dispensers ever again! :-)
