Verizon Center WiFi Update

We live in one of the most wired cities in the country, and our recently completed improvements to the Verizon Center WiFi networks ensure our arena is among the top venues in the United States for providing connectivity to our guests.

Prior to the summer of 2010, WiFi access was not offered to fans at Verizon Center. At that time we were only providing WiFi access to team operations personnel and the media.

As many of you recall, AT&T and Verizon had extremely limited coverage in the arena. AT&T did not have a repeater and thus provided almost zero coverage. Verizon had one repeater and coverage was average, but the call capacity was low.

Since Monumental Sports & Entertainment became owners of the Verizon Center in the summer of 2010, we have installed 75 additional WiFi access points throughout the lower bowl, upper bowl and within the Verizon Center suites. We plan to install additional access points this summer as we determine those areas in need of additional service.

Both AT&T and Verizon recently completed improvements, and now both carriers have fully operational, dedicated cell sites with 4G capability. Verizon has just completed its upgrades and will continue to make adjustments during the next few months in order to achieve optimal service. Ideally fans will take advantage of the significantly faster 4G signal to stream video, which also will alleviate some of the WiFi demand.

We are aware that because of the structure of the building there will be times when customers may experience problems with sending texts, pictures, etc. Please be assured, however, that we will continue to test and monitor these improvements in order to make adjustments whenever possible and necessary. If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please email us at connectivity@monumentalsports.com. When emailing us, it would be helpful to include as many details as possible (e.g., date of interruption, type of interruption, cell phone type and carrier, seat location).

Also, as you may have seen and heard, we have installed an FM transmitter on frequency 87.9 so Capitals, Wizards and Georgetown fans can listen to the radio broadcast in the arena.

All of these improvements are aimed at increasing the overall experience for our fans and guests at Verizon Center. Enjoy.

What Does This Mean?

AT&T and Disney are the two most powerful brands on Twitter? Aren’t they two of the most powerful brands period? In old media and in the real world?

Check out this list. I am not sure what it all means but I am surprised that a hot, young, tech-based, leading edge early adopter service would have an old world telephony brand and a kids’ media brand be the two leading brands on the service.

Enlighten me. What does this mean?
