Best Buddies Spotlight

In Washington Life.

With a spotlight on my e-buddy – Big Ken Holden.

A photo of us in front of the White House at an event with our President; and then at the home of VP Biden. A nice group shot.

I am very proud of my friendship and the 10k plus emails that have been sent and received between me and Big Ken.

David Archuleta Performed For All on Saturday

At the EKS Challenge.

He is a very nice young man; a great talent; and very supportive of Best Buddies and The Special Olympics. Click here for info.

Thanks to all for being so supportive. Thanks to Mayor Fenty for participating in the bike race and for helping us throughout the weekend. It was great to see Carl Lewis again!

Thanks to Mike Knuble and his wife for joining us, too, on Friday night with VP Biden and Dr. Biden.

I walked in the 3k with my Best Buddy Big Ken Holden. It was a perfect Autumn Day in DC.

Thanks to Rosetta Stone and CEO Tom Adams, too, for being so supportive of the cause.

And Jack Davies and Neil Cohen completed the 100 k race in less than 5 hours.

Vice President Biden and Dr. Biden

They were so kind to host us all at their home last night. Joe Biden is a class act! He gave a moving speech about the Shriver Family and Eunice Shriver, comparing her work for people with disabilities with Martin Luther King’s work for civil rights.

The Shriver family held a party to celebrate today’s EKS Challenge. Jack Davies and Neil Cohen – two great friends and partners in Monumental Sports - attended and will be in the 100 kilometer bike race today, too. Thank you.

I will be there at 7:30 am to host the volunteers and the participants. I am writing this blog post at 5:45 am this morning!

My Best Buddy, Ken Holden; his sister Kendra; and his family will all be here today and will also attend the Caps game tonight with us. See this article for info on Ken Holden and our friendship. Today will be a great day. Do something to help somebody! Get out and race and have some fun.

Me and Big Ken Holden at the White House

My eBuddy, Big Ken Holden from Tampa, and I went to the White House yesterday to celebrate National Mentoring Month. We represented Best Buddies at the event.

We waited outside in the cold for 30 minutes with about 100 other mentors and mentees. We were ID checked outside. We then went to another checkpoint where we were IDed again. We then went to a third checkpoint where we were screened with metal detectors, etc. and ID checked again. Thanks “gate crashers” for making the security checks much tougher and longer than usual.

Then we walked into the White House where everyone was very open and friendly. Piano music was being played and members of the military were there to host and escort us.

Ken and I walked around. I took many photos of him in front of Presidential portraits and in several rooms. We then went to the event itself. Mrs. Obama and the POTUS both delivered wonderful speeches. Some photos were taken and then we were told we could mingle and meet other mentors and then we left.

We were in and out in 75 minutes. It was run very efficiently and very smoothly. It was a wonderful event and I am proud to have been invited. It was also wonderful to spend quality time with Ken who then took his Mom to the Wizards game and sat in my seats on the floor. All in all, it was a nice visit at the White House and a great day for Best Buddies.
