Small Percentage

The Washington Post ran its poll. Do you love, hate or are you indifferent to the moves made by the Washington Capitals?About 2,000 people took the poll.

On Sturm – 69% percent of the people loved the signing and 1% hated it.

On Arnott – 64% loved the signing and 11% hated it (mostly because these fans liked and respected David Steckel)

On Wideman – 70% loved it and 3% hated it.

I just took the poll today and saw the updated percentages.

Overall a lot of positive sentiments here. Thank you. Love is in the air.

But wait – read the comments. Almost 90% are negative on the trades.

What does that tell you?

The small percentage of people that “hate” are the people with the loudest voices, with the most opinions and with the most comments.

Thank goodness for the nice silent or happy majority and for the people who are fans and customers of the Washington Capitals.

I try to hear and listen to all voices but this little social media experiment was quite instructive. We need to look at mass numbers and input and listen to all voices but understand the percentages of the communities of interest we serve. Thank you.

Change – Lots of Change

We have added many new players this year to our lineup for the Washington Capitals, some young and some veterans. Some via call ups; some via the amateur draft; and some via trades.We added Scott Hannan earlier in the year via trade.

And over the last 24 hours we added Marco Sturm, Dennis Wideman and Jason Arnott to the lineup.

All of these players are seasoned vets and playoff tested.

That is a lot of change. As promised.

We had to give up some value for Scott Hannan as we shipped off a fine young player in return. We miss Tomas but Scott has turned into a very steady and dependable blue liner for us. He is very solid in the room as well.

We got Marco Sturm off the waiver wire from LA. He is a consistent 20 goal scorer. I have a good vibe about this move.

We traded a prospect and a third round pick to get Dennis Wideman. He can play solid D; is quite mobile; and is very effective on the power play.

And for Jason Arnott we had to trade a vet player from our line up plus a second round pick. Jason is a battle tested big center who has played very well in the biggest games imaginable. I will miss David Steckel very much but to get value you have to trade some value back.

However we stayed on our strategy. We didn’t trade any of our highly valued and vaunted prospects and we didn’t trade our first round pick in next year’s draft. We added to the lineup at the deadline. We added vets as promised.

Kudos to our front office. They did a great job in adding to the team. Onward now for the last 19 games of the season. Let us all hope that change is good! Let us all believe this is change we can believe in. Go Caps!

Takes All Kinds

David Steckel is a very valuable member of our team. He is a big game player; a great teammate; and a big strong center that also plays wing. He is great on face offs and on penalty kills. He shuts other players down on defense. He is also a leader and is very poised on the ice in crucial moments.

A team needs component parts to excel in all the areas of the game to be successful. We know and understand that fact. Stats can be misleading.

Whether David has scored a goal or not this season is not that important. He is vital to our team and to his teammates. We win as a team and we lose as a team.

We respect his game. We value him. He is important to us, his teammates and to the fan base.

David will score goals but he needs to know he is respected and embraced and that we appreciate what he does for our team when he isn’t scoring goals.

I am very grateful to him for his contributions to our team. This article doesn’t do justice to his contributions. He is trusted by our coach and by his teammates. My bet is that he will win many games for us in this season and in the playoffs with big time goals and his overall quality of play. Go Caps!

So in the One Week That I Took Off From Blogging, We Learned That…

  • Chris Clark is feeling better and getting ready for training camp;
  • That David Steckel will be playing for the Caps for two more years at least;
  • That “On Frozen Blog” wanted to run marketing; merchandising sales and media management for the Washington Capitals;
  • That the weather and smog in China is pretty bad this time of year and would affect the Olympians as I predicted a year ago;
  • That more than 5,000 virtual movie theaters have been opened and operated by fellow filmanthropists working with SnagFilms. And – if you can believe it – more than 7 .5 million views of SnagFilms have happened in less than 30 days;
  • That the new Facebook design was a bit troubling for us;
  • That Gilbert Arenas wanted sharks for his home aquarium;
  • That the new Batman film really is great;
  • And that taking one week off from blogging can recharge the batteries. Welcome back.
