NBA Offseason Performance Grades by ESPN

ESPN’s Chad Ford recently graded all 30 NBA teams based on their offseason performances. The Wizards received an A, tying them with Oklahoma City for the second-highest mark in the league (behind Miami’s A+). In addition to his acknowledgement of how quickly we’ve been able to turn things around following last season’s numerous distractions, he had the following observations:

· John Wall “has a chance to be a superstar”

· The trade for Kirk Hinrich “was a steal” and also brought us an “intriguing first-round talent” in Kevin Seraphin

· Yi Jianlian could be “a steal” based on the promise he showed at the World Championships

· Gilbert Arenas is “healthy, humbled and vowing to take it out on opponents”

· The Wizards could “be contenders again in a few years”

We are indeed proud of the rebuilding plan we’ve been able to put into place in such a short amount of time. But the real work will begin in earnest when the team steps onto the court at midnight on September 28.

What We Were Looking For…

A viewer and fan of SnagFilms spoke to me yesterday and told me how moved she was about our film A Fighting Chance.

She said ”Sometimes little day-to-day things get me down and I get depressed. I watched your film and I must admit that Kyle Maynard was so positive and so on-the-go and so genuine - it was uplifting. I promise that whenever little things get me down from here on out I will flash back to the film and to Kyle’s ‘No Excuses’ mantra. Thank you.”

Isn’t that terrific?

Watch this weekend if you haven’t had a chance. Kyle is a one-of-a-kind human being. I consider him a friend and an inspiration. He is a true American hero. Thank you ESPN for helping us and supporting us with this film. Kyle is one of our great athletes and “No Excuses” should become the mantra for all of our teams!

World Premiere – “A Fighting Chance”

Get a sneak peek right here right now of A Fighting Chance. It is part of SnagFilm’s SummerFest series.

This film will debut on ESPN in November.

It was produced by me and Rick Allen and my daughter Elle is an associate producer.

It was directed by two very talented artists, Takashi Doscher and Alex Shofner. This is their first film. I am proud of them.

It is about Kyle Maynard, one of the great athletes and great inspirational characters of our time.

Watch this movie. Share this positive story. Embed it into your blog or website or Facebook page. Retweet it and pass it on. Thank you.

Verizon Center / ESPN Report

I was surprised and disappointed by ESPN’s recent industry-wide report and ratings related to the cleanliness of professional sports venues, including Verizon Center. Since we acquired Verizon Center from Washington Sports and Entertainment six weeks ago, we have been planning and making improvements. Please be assured that we take the complaints of our customers extremely seriously, and quality and cleanliness are paramount.

We remain in the early stages of our evaluation process, and the ESPN report touched on some of the elements we have been examining and will be vigilant in improving. We will redouble our efforts immediately and review all facets of the issues identified. Once we have the facts, we will embark on remedies.

From what I understand, the ESPN report stems from incidents in 2009. These professional inspections are conducted several times throughout the year, are unannounced and are public record. When and if issues arise, we will take appropriate action, and from what I understand we have done exactly that in the past.

Aramark and Levy are our concessionaires at the arena. We have had a good relationship with both of them throughout the years, and we count on them to maintain a clean, safe, courteous and responsible service environment for our customers. Aramark recently launched a website to demonstrate and highlight their continued commitment to food safety, www.aramarkqualityfood.com.

The past couple of weeks I have talked about my plan to walk a mile in our employees’ footsteps and participate in the cleaning process. I now will step up those efforts and make this a top priority. I will personally get involved in the process and the solutions. We are on it; we’ve already started. We will move this issue from one that appears shocking to one that is a source of pride. I promise.

Thirty Years of ESPN

I feel like ESPN has been a friend of the family for decades.

I am about midway through a new book called ESPN The Company by Anthony F. Smith. It is a good read about a company that is now one of the most valuable franchises in all of media and business.

ESPN is a worldwide highly valued brand with literally hundreds of millions of fans; billions and billions of dollars in revenues; and is probably one of the most profitable franchises in business today.

ESPN is celebrating its 30th Anniversary and the Huffington Post did a great piece on ESPN with a terrific video montage in homage to the brand. Check it out by clicking here. Enjoy.
