Portals are Still About Bread and Butter

Portals are really all about email; messaging; stock quotes; and – of course - search. Yahoo mail; AOL mail; Hotmail are the big drivers of clicks. It amazes me that the portals don’t double down on communications and make mail, messaging and the address book better; cleaner; faster; and spam free! What could possibly be more important?

News, music and movies sneak in a bit as content sites and some other functionality for video and audio playing. But specialists are winning here: Hulu, YouTube, ESPN, CNN, Google News, etc. etc. It is hard for a portal to win in specialist areas.

Clueless at ESPN…Again

Check out this article

Last time I looked, the Caps were 12th in the NHL in overall attendance. Revenues are up by double digits, 25 percent. We were the second fastest-growing team in the NHL. We have increased our season ticket holder base dramatically. We have a sea of red at games and the NHL is booming too.

Now let us look at Disney, parent company of ESPN. Last quarter, Disney earnings were down 13 percent. The outlook is sobering. One analyst said it was “an ugly, ugly quarter.”

Overall revenues grew only six percent. ESPN ad revenues were down. Stock price is way down. Analysts are growing concerned about outlook. Layoffs are coming, big cuts everywhere. Now Sports Czar, what is it that you want to say about our team; our fans; and our outlook again? Your move.

Never Listen To The Experts:-).

We havent done anything; we aren’t this good yet–temper your expectations, please.

We have miles to go before we sleep; I am serious– we cant believe any of this pre season hype– we must perform on the ice. Where it matters.

I must admit– it does feel good to see the respect we are being shown– as I stated last year– “The rebuild is over”; now how many of you thought we would be ranked this high– this fast ?

I dont take any of this seriously– it is all speculation– we are committed to improvement and to be a great team for a generation; and we want and need to win a Stanley Cup; let us just go out and play and stop the talking.
