Kudos to George and Dick

Thanks for this nice article. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good and winning the lottery was a great piece of luck. But George and Dick did great work in recrafting the team to be ready for the new NHL. The trades for prospects and picks were the right ones to follow and they executed it all very well. We are a young team still with upside and with great prospects awaiting their turn as well. It is a great time to be a fan of the Washington Capitals. Go Caps!

Red Matter

Monday, May 18th, 2009

We just came back from seeing the re-imagined Star Trek film — and I must say I enjoyed it as did every member of my family.  Paramount has a new — tent pole — series now — this film series will become epic — ala Harry Potter or the Batman franchises — kudos to JJ Abrams for doing great directorial duties; the story held together and the CGI didn’t overwhelm the character development.  Star Trek is  great summer entertainment fun — and at the heart of the story was a new element called “Red Matter“; when it first appeared — I heard a young man sitting three rows ahead of us in the theatre  say — “Lets Go Caps”.  That made my day.  Red Matter was also central in blowing up the world and starting all over. Good for George McPhee. This is a very nice article on George and his work for us regarding the rebuild and the make-up of this team. Click here for details.

George also hired our coach which he deserves a lot of credit for as well.

We have been through a lot together. I am proud to work with George and his staff.

Grumpy Old Guys

How many folks out there would like to see a George McPhee Bobblehead Night?

I can see it now, it trades you or it punches you before you get it opened. :-)

Thanks Thom. We all need to have fun at times like this. We all need enjoyment and belief in better times ahead. Your article here made me smile and we all hope that our fans have a great time and leave smiling after our games.

Here is an interview with George McPhee. Well done and thank you.

As I read this post, I was surprised to note that Brendan Witt was a minus -5 last night in our 5-4 overtime win. Ouch.

Looking Forward to the Draft

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Here we go again - back to the drafting tables. This is the weekend of the year where our amateur scouts earn their money and see payback for all of their time spent on the road.

We have a first round pick and a bunch of second round picks. We can trade up. We can make some trades for more picks. We can use our picks and prospects for a trade of a player that can help us today. We can trade some picks for this year for some picks in an out year. We can stay put and use them all. We have a lot of choices.

George McPhee plays it so close to the vest that even I don’t know what he is thinking. I do know that he listens to his scouts and professionals and that they fight and argue - in a good-hearted fashion - about who are the best players at what positions. I also know that the team’s philosophy is to pick the best available player on the board that is left when it is our time to pick. We don’t usually draft by positional need.

I do know now that we have a lot of fire power; a lot of role players; and a lot of goalie prospects in the pipeline. We have work to do in the off season on finalizing our lineup for next season but the draft will add to our potential lineup. Last year’s #1 pick, Karl Alzner, will be fighting for a spot in the lineup when camp opens. The NHL draft is a time of renewal and of potential and a time for us to hope and dream. Can we find someone who is a steal in the later rounds? Can we package up a pick and a player for a player that impacts our team today? Stay tuned. This is a fun time of year. The draft is how we chose to rebuild the team. It works. It is important and fundamental. Wish George and the scouting team luck this weekend.
