Sitting outside a playoff spot

Here is a strong piece by John Feinstein on the Capital’s and where we sit.

We are in the 9th spot – one point behind Toronto in the 8th spot.

There are several teams creeping up behind us.

Losing like we did last night doesn’t help our cause. We have 14 road games left to play. And 12 at home.

We have a few days left this week to practice – with a focus on special teams.

Then we embark on a very tough road trip.

We have 2 games to play at home for the rest of the month.

52 standing points left to be had.

Onward.

Hanging together

I do not agree in any way with the suspension of Alex Ovechkin for 3 games. I support Alex Ovechkin. He is our bedrock player – our Captain; and he and his family know that we are always here to support him.

The decision has been made; and George McPhee will address the media today with our thoughts and concerns about the suspension.

While there is a lot of emotion and concern today – we have a game to play tonight against perhaps the best team in the league and we then have 2 games on the road against division foes, after the All Star game.

Tonight – we will play without Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green and Nick Backstrom. These are our three best players and represent a third of our payroll; there is simply no way short term to make up their productivity unless other players step up – and we must be focused on winning and not on being shorthanded. Our team mentality must and will stay positive.

It is possible that the road trip after the All Star game will also see us play without 3 of our core players as well.

So – it is time for us – truly – to hang together – band together – play as a unit- be supportive; scratch out some wins or points in any way that we can.

There are 35 games left to play this season. 70 standings points to be had.

As this article attests – we have to be productive as to gaining points at home – while playing better on the road. This article maps out the road ahead

In times of strife and high emotion; it is best to act with clear thoughts and to stay positive.

Go Caps!

Kudos to George and Dick

Thanks for this nice article. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good and winning the lottery was a great piece of luck. But George and Dick did great work in recrafting the team to be ready for the new NHL. The trades for prospects and picks were the right ones to follow and they executed it all very well. We are a young team still with upside and with great prospects awaiting their turn as well. It is a great time to be a fan of the Washington Capitals. Go Caps!

Red Matter

We just came back from seeing the re-imagined Star Trek film — and I must say I enjoyed it as did every member of my family.  Paramount has a new — tent pole — series now — this film series will become epic — ala Harry Potter or the Batman franchises — kudos to JJ Abrams for doing great directorial duties; the story held together and the CGI didn’t overwhelm the character development.  Star Trek is  great summer entertainment fun — and at the heart of the story was a new element called “Red Matter“; when it first appeared — I heard a young man sitting three rows ahead of us in the theatre  say — “Lets Go Caps”.  That made my day.  Red Matter was also central in blowing up the world and starting all over.
