Twitter Wants To Be Like Facebook

Facebook wants to be like Twitter.

Google wants to be more social.

Microsoft wants to be more like Google.

Bing is growing. Google is flat.

Foursquare is cool.

Groupon is real.

AddThis is way up in sharing.

Amazon is innovating and taking virtual currencies.

Twitter makes nice videos and understands it brand. Click here. I will still use TweetDeck but this is a wise move by Twitter.

Facebook to respond? TweetDeck to respond?

Drives Me Crazy

Sometimes being first isn’t the best right answer. I know - I once worked at AOL!

Google is making BIG NEWS. They have integrated phone calling from email and messaging that is called “convergence.” Text and audio. Together. Hooray.

Aol did this eight years ago!

AIM with VoIP and don’t forget AOLbyPhone.

What will be next - video conferencing integrated into mail and messaging? Been there and done that, too! I wish Aol could be reinvigorated again around “communications and content with commerce” relevantly baked in via presence. What is old is new again!

Third Screen Era in Place Now

Wow… that was fast.

We talked about the era of the third screen for thirty years. Eras where computers, televisions, and phones would all have high quality screens and delivery platforms that were “converged.” We talked and talked and then in the last 5 years– wow total consumer acceptance.

Isn’t it ironic that the three leaders in this space are a start up Blackberry, a web company-Google, and a pc software company-Apple?

Check out the growth of Apple Iphone. I believe they sold more than 8 million last quarter.

And Google’s Android beat them in terms of market share. Google is now number 2 in the space. Amazing progress. Where is Microsoft by the way? Read this article.

Google Helps You Live Longer

Now that is a great consumer claim!

Read this article. As an evangelist for the benefits of the Web for a long time, I always thought the Internet could make you happy and smarter and add to your productivity and longevity. We are social animals. Solitary confinement is considered torture.

If crossword puzzles are good for your mind then so is the Internet.

I was made happy reading this article.

Is Google Screwing With Me, Personally?

I am not making this up.

I went to Google today — and a screen popped up that said…” Were sorry — but the computer you are using may be sending automated inquiries; to make sure you are human — type in the term you see below”…

The term was blurry — and I had to concentrate on the type face and there was a small box to enter the term; and guess what the term was to type in?

Belessfed.

Can’t make this stuff up!

Anonymity Only Goes So Far These Days

Google was forced by a court to turn over information regarding a blogger’s identity. This is big news. The offending blogger turned out to be a friend of the victim in this case. How sad. And to be honest, it was all about some “name calling” and not actual physical threats.

Anonymity only goes so far these days. Be careful about what you post on message boards and on blogs. Threats and statements that you don’t want ultimately to be tagged with your name or email address – or even your photograph – are easily traceable. Be careful out there. Most people’s identity can be found out using email, Facebook, Google and, in this case, a court order.

There is less and less anonymity on the web so be prepared to stand behind what you say. Or don’t say it in the first place and believe that you will remain anonymous. This court ruling was surprising to me but it is what it is. New rules are being written daily about privacy on the web. Stay atop of what is happening out there. Read this article.

Back to the Future on Voice

Read this article on voice services at Google. Back to the future.

I envisioned, founded and launched - with the help of John Borthwick, founder of Betaworks - AOL By Phone. That was ten years ago. We acquired Quack; a voice recognition company, to help launch it.

The service still works. It combines email, voice mail-location based services; mapping and more onto your phone. You could browse the web via voice; have your email read to you; and even respond. It was fast and very accurate. You could ask for a phone number; a map and directions; a movie time; a sports team score; and then place a call. It leveraged our data in MapQuest and Moviefone and Digital Cities. It used presence from AIM and our technology and platform in email.

Bing – Is It An “Aha” Moment?

So I have been using the new Bing service for a few days. There is a lot of industry hype around it and you just know that one of these days Microsoft will get it right and take some share away from Google in the search marketplace. Right? Click here to try it.

Bing looks pretty and different. Its navigation is new and it has been working/scaling well now in terms of performance and it is seems to be pretty fast. Bing is trying to differentiate itself with its UI with its verticalization of some key channels such as Travel and Shopping and the way it surfaces photos.
