More Details on This Weekend’s Events
I am hopeful that we can turn out a crowd to watch this weekend’s events.
First, starting on Friday, there will be a free street soccer tournament held at the Kastles Stadium at the old convention center site, 11th and H Street in downtown DC. We will be hosting a bunch of teams from around the country. We are bringing in about 100 homeless soccer players, their coaches and some volunteers and they will be playing street soccer all day on Friday, Saturday and on Sunday afternoon. The winners will be picked to represent the US in the Homeless World Cup in Melbourne, Australia, this December.
If you can come, consider volunteering to help us, or if you attend the games, please bring some bottled water and some granola bars for our players as a show of support.
On Friday evening the film “Kicking It” opens at the E Street Cinema, 555 11th Street NW in Washington, DC. This film – which just showed to a standing room only crowd at Silverdocs on Saturday – was directed by local talent and was produced by me and some friends and partners in our sports teams. Please consider going to see the film and going to the web site. Click here for more information. See you all on Friday.
Kastles Stadium in Downtown DC Almost Complete
Check out these photos. This is where the Washington Kastles tennis team will play and where the US Trials of the Homeless World Cup will be played next weekend. I am hopeful that people will come on out to support the players at the games. We need your support and when you come to a game, please bring some granola bars and some bottled water to share with our players.

BIG NEWS: Street Soccer Comes to Washington, DC
My family’s charitable foundation is so pleased to help bring the Homeless World Cup US Trials to Washington, DC, from June 27th to June 29th. The games will be played at the new Washington Kastles tennis stadium in downtown DC. Mark Ein, owner of the Kastles, was also an executive producer of our film on this subject called “Kicking It”.
More than 100 homeless players and their coaches and volunteers will be coming to Washington, DC, to participate in this program. There will be tournaments and games to choose the best players to represent the US in the Homeless World Cup to be held in Melbourne, Australia in December of 2008. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for these people and I am hopeful you will come and watch the games.
“Kicking It” will open that same Friday night at the Landmark E Street Cinema and we will bring out the players and staff to one of the premiere screenings. Also, DC United is playing the LA Galaxy on that Sunday and MLS soccer and DC United have invited us and the players to come to the game and be recognized at halftime at RFK Stadium. What a thrill and true synergy to have our film open; DC United playing the LA Galaxy on ABC; and the tournament all scheduled the same weekend! As you know, the film “Kicking It” will debut on ESPN in September of 2008 as well.
I am honored to help this wonderful organization, Street Soccer USA, and the Homeless World Cup all work to help shine a light on homelessness and how a “ball can change your life”. Come on out to the games. Support us. Come on out and see the film at Silverdocs on Saturday or at the Landmark E Street Cinema next weekend.

Heads Up: US Trials for Homeless World Cup Coming to Washington DC
As many of you know, a group of us helped produce a wonderful film called “Kicking It“. The film pivots around a charity soccer tournament called the Homeless World Cup. This charity is a terrific enterprise and believes that a “ball can change one’s life” and that teamwork and being part of a competitive environment can enhance and upgrade one’s standing in life.
The film has been very successful. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. It then went on to the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC in May and will come to Washington, DC, at the SILVERDOCS Film Festival in June. The film will open in theaters in LA, NYC and DC in June as well. Please see this website for specific info on times and theaters as well. ESPN is a partner in the film and will be broadcasting the film on its networks, too, this fall and Netflix will stream the film as well.
This year’s Homeless World Cup will be played in Melbourne, Australia in December. See website for more information. The US Trials for picking a team to send to Australia will be held in DC in late June. Come back soon to this blog for specific information on locations, times and how you can help.
We wanted to bring the US Trials of the Homeless World Cup to DC to help promote the causes related to stopping homelessness and to introduce this charity to the people of our nations’ capital.
The weekend for the event will be June 27th to the 29th. This coincides with the opening of the film in Washington, DC, and is also scheduled around the DC United vs. LA Galaxy game at RFK Stadium.
We will provide lots of information around this event and how you can help soon but please hold these dates in your schedule and plan to come on out and help us support this most worthy cause.
