An icon of indie film distribution has shut its doors. New Yorker Films is no longer in business. Read all about it here on indieWIRE. The economy is taking its toll on every single industry.
IndieWIRE on New Distribution
Here is an insightful article on film festivals and new distribution methodologies.
In case anyone hadn’t noticed, more films were made and submitted to Sundance this year and less were bought for distribution than ever before.
The bottleneck is worse than ever.
TV acquisition budgets are being cut at a quickening pace.
The boutique studios are running for the hills.
Angel investors have a lot less money to experiment and invest in indie films.
We had all better work and hope that new distribution channels work. What is the plan B if they don’t?
I will update everyone on SnagFilms later next week but we are seeing steep function growth, a doubling of our base over a 90 day period. We are on to something. We will step on the accelerator to keep it growing to help. IndieWIRE, a part of SnagFilms, is growing like a weed too as we have less competition and the new redesign has great consumer appeal.
Instead of whining and hand-wringing, let us all get back to work to figure out the model and figure out how to connect filmmakers and their work to the biggest audience out there and find new ways to generate dollars as well for filmmakers, investors, charities and causes.
We are at a gut check period for the industry. The good old days are gone forever. Wash your mind and clear your head. Reset your expectations and reboot. It is a new day. Many people will long for the old days but they are long gone. Onward to a new way. We are in it together so let’s get back to work.

Here is a great story and note that CNN lists out indieWIRE as a top site for all things about indie films. Thank you so much.
Truer Words Have Never Been Spoken
Doom and gloom is in the air for indie films at Sundance. Check out this article. I believe there is still a great market for great films premiering all week at this great one-of-a-kind film festival.
IndieWIRE’s 100 Best of the Year

This is Why I Think SnagFilms Can Help
Check out this article on how tough it is for all indie films to get into theaters. The internet has to solve this issue and we need to put the financial onus on advertisers not on consumers to get these films to a wide audience.
Ray of Hope?
I certainly hope so!
Kudos to Sundance
The Sundance Documentary Fund is such a great program. I believe that nonfiction film and documentary programming is the right format for the Web 2.0 generation. Young adults are growing up in the YouTube world. They will all be accustomed to having cameras in their hands at all times. Everyone will be a filmmaker!
Telling real life stories; documenting real time news; expressing themselves via video; and nonfiction storytelling is the future of entertainment and Web 2.0 distribution.
Well Done
A great perspective on indie films, very insightful.
