The More Things Change the More Things Stay the Same

Here is a link to the list of the Top 10 web brands as measured by engagement of audience. This data is from Nielsen as of July 2011.

AOL is still a Top 10 network of sites pulling in at # 7.

Google and Facebook rule as # 1 and # 2.

This list hasn’t changed much as to Top 10 participants in a long time. I thought this list would be of interest to you. Thank you.

Scares Me a Bit

THIS is the kind of data and charts I saw in 1996 that started to drive the first Internet bubble! Doesn’t it look familiar? I think WorldCom back in the day published these kinds of charts.

Internet traffic as proxy for success.

Three billion users.

Smaller and smaller stuff to use.

I am a believer. These numbers might even be conservative but I am hopeful I don’t see them again and again and again as justification of an investment thesis or as a starting point in presentations at conferences. Stated as truth and fact!

Today I heard from someone I respect very much that he thought there would be 5 billion literate human beings on the planet and that 1 billion of them would learn how to read their first words on a tablet a la the iPad in less than 10 years! Mind numbing…

15 to 20 Years

When asked what is old, most people say 15 to 20 years older than themselves.

Ask a 20 year old, he or she says 35 to 40 seems old.

Ask a 45 year old, he or she says 60 to 65 years of age.

Alley Insider just ran a story about established websites and how it will make you feel old.

They link to Whenthewhat.com and this list starts with IMDB in 1992.

I will link to America Online/Control Video in 1983. I am old! See Wiki here.

Time flies when you are having fun.

Stats

China will soon double the Internet penetration of the US. China has 420 million users today. The US has 240 million. China’s growth rate is more than double the US.

And here comes India which will soon hit 100 million Internet users. They have about 80 million today.

Mind-blowing Numbers

I guess the Internet isn’t a fad.

Check out these latest numbers. Click here for startling facts and figures.

The most mind blowing? There are now more than 1.7 billion people using the Internet around the world and less than 200 million in the US.

I remember when there were less than 1 million people on the Internet and we all connected at 1200 baud.

Spam would seem to be the #1 issue on the net today. Ugh!

The Internet Did It – Blame the Internet

This seems to be the anti-Internet month by the major mainstream media. All month I have read articles or seen stories on TV that have blamed the Internet for:

  • Young adults not getting get enough Vitamin D because they stay inside too much and play on their computers and the Internet. They are vitamin deprived because they don’t get enough sunshine and natural vitamin D;
  • Young adults and the increasing obesity rate. Kids aren’t exercising enough anymore. They stay inside and play on the Internet;
  • Cyber bullying is rampant. Kids are being psychologically abused all because of the Internet;

Big Numbers

There are more than 1 billion people online around the world. That is such an amazing statistic. When I first went online there were less than 100,000 people connected to the Internet. How is that for growth?
According to comScore, the top five players ranked by monthly visitors include:

1.  Google - 600 million plus

2.  Microsoft sites - 540 million plus

3.  Yahoo sites - 488 million or so

4.  AOL – 240 million plus

5.  Wikipedia – 240 million plus

It is surprising that Apple is now in the top 10 with 139 plus million and that Facebook has hit 100 million plus as well.

What is more amazing is that online growth is booming outside of North America and that US online usage is now at about only 20 percent of worldwide usage.
