A Lot to be Grateful for – A Lot to Mourn and Miss

It is the heart of the holiday season, the festive week of Christmas to New Year’s. It is time to reflect and be grateful for what we have and not miss what we don’t have.

Last year this time we all were feeling doom and gloom. The market was down. There were no loans to be had. People were losing jobs left and right and the aura and psychology of the market and the overall economy was really bad.

As we close on 2009, I must confess that the year was one of goodness and counter intuitive wins mixed with sadness.

I am most grateful for the health of my family and friends.

And the Washington Capitals had a magnificent twelve months on the ice and off the ice. We had a really great record. We finished last year strong and won our first playoff series in 10 years and we are now well positioned for this next year. We also sell out all of our games. We have a backlog of people awaiting season tickets. We were able to raise our prices and we have very happy customer satisfaction levels. Who would have thought we could be that successful in this economy? I am very grateful to you all.

The Washington Mystics also grew quite fast and became one of the best performing teams in the WNBA and turned their on court performance around as well as we qualified for the playoffs.

Revolution Money grew fast; built out its platform; and – as was reported in November – was acquired by American Express at a healthy return to investors. We await final approval by the government but I believe this deal will close sometime in Q1 of 2010. This was the third largest acquisition of a new media payments platform ever behind PayPal and Bill Me Later (both by eBay) so it was a big win for us all and I am very excited about helping the American Express Company in the future as we roll out this platform into a new series of great consumer beneficial products and services.

Joe Casella Obituary

Click here for Joe Casella’s obituary. Yesterday’s services were wonderful, warm and family-oriented. Lots of tears were shed. A lot of memories were exchanged. Many hugs and embraces were shared. So many good times were recounted and so many warm words were uttered about Joe and his entire extended family.

To all our friends, please keep going to Elite Fitness Concepts. We need your support and please stay tuned for ways that you can help the Casella family. Thank you so much.

Only the Good Die Young

Our local community lost a great friend this weekend with the passing of Joe Casella. Joe was only 40 years old. He was a great friend and the owner of Elite Fitness Concepts in Great Falls, Virginia.

Joe was a wonderful husband to his wife Gina; a caring and loving father to three children (his third child being born while he was in recovery from surgery); a man’s man; a gentle soul; and really a pillar of our local community.

He was a physical specimen, one of the best athletes not in professional sports that I have ever known. He was a friend to the elderly and rehabilitating and he pushed the fit to be even fitter. He also served as something of a psychologist and father confessor to us all. He was a great listener and always made me smile. He was a huge Capitals fan but loved the Yankees most of all.

A Perspective: Celebrate Every Day

You must read this story.

It is about a very good friend of mine named Joe Casella. Joe is close with several of my partners as well.

Joe is a wonderful human being. He is married with children and another one on the way.

He is founder of Elite Fitness Concepts, a gym and health rehab center in Great Falls, Virginia. The center is now celebrating its tenth anniversary.

Joe is everyone’s best friend. His center has become the “Cheers” of Great Falls.

Joe is like the local celebrity bartender except he kicks your butt when you work out with him. :-) He is beloved in our community.

He is “a god-like” physical specimen; a great man; a great friend; a great husband and dad.

Joe was recently diagnosed with mesothelioma. This is a tough disease. It is no longer something that I read about and think that this awful absestos related malady touches people that are older and people that I don’t know. It has now touched someone I do know in the prime of his life. And it hurts.

Joe is taking on this challenge positively. All of his friends and clients are rallying around him. All of us are praying for him and his family. Joe is a fighter and we are with him every step of the way on this journey.

I sent Joe a couple of the Courage Caps yesterday. He is the bravest soul I know. Keep him in your thoughts and take this story as a good life lesson. Celebrate every day.
