How Many Times Has The Shoe Been On The Other Foot?

Detroit played a great game last night. They were in a groove; played their system; and took it to us. At one point in the first period, I looked at the scoreboard and it said 15 shots vs. 2 shots and the score was tied 0-0.

Jose Theodore was stellar. He played with great confidence. He stole that game for us. Kudos. Atta boy. Way to go.

We won over a very dangerous Detroit team 3-2. It was a game that I thought we didn’t deserve to win. But we have reached that point now in our development. We don’t play as well as our capabilities and we can still beat a fantastic opponent. Everyone chips in and we get the two points. We have beaten Philly and Detroit back to back and now we go play Pittsburgh. I don’t ever remember a more competitive three game stretch since we bought the team 11 years ago.

Our fourth line was just awesome. Bradley and Steckel played the game with playoff-like intensity.

But it was our goaltending that was the highlight of the game. Jose Theodore played lights out.

He truly stole the win for us. Thank you. Go Caps!

We now have 68 points - first in the East and third in the NHL.

Jose Theodore

I met with Jose and his family yesterday. He is very fit and he is very excited. He said he would come to DC in August to skate with his new teammates. He cannot wait to get on the ice. He actually said he wanted to skate with the rookies at camp yesterday but he needed to find a home in the area which he had done.

I was very happy to hear him say that he had watched us play a lot during the year. He also mentioned watching two of our playoff games with Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg and that they all noted how the young Caps reminded them of the old Avalanche in many ways; a team built through the draft and with young players who grew up together. I took that as a great compliment.

He also said he remembered when we played them that we had out shot them at one point 30 to 10 and that he went to the bench and one of his teammates said, “Who do these guys think they are? The Red Wings?” Very funny!

Jose also mentioned to me that his father is Greek. Theodore is a shortened name as his dad’s name is actually Theodore Theodore, which is common in Greece/Macedonia. Jose is half Greek and half Spanish and he grew up in Montreal.

He is psyched to be here which was so great to hear face to face. He loves playing for a team that can compete for the Cup right now, which were his words exactly. He also thinks we have an exciting team and that we have the best player in the world.  He also said it was fun to know that we have a team that has three players that served as MVP of the entire NHL on our roster. He believes that will gain us respect around the league.

Jose looks very young. He is a veteran of the NHL but he has many years  left to play great hockey. He and his family will settle here very quickly. His family has already embraced the community and have bought a home. Let us welcome him to DC. I was very pleased with our face to face meeting. He knows and has embraced what we are building here in DC.

Joe-Zay

Jose Theodore is very happy to be in DC. It is a sophisticated city with a great fan base and he knows the buzz around the league is very positive about our team; around the chemistry in the locker room; our coach and his relationship with the team; and the GM and ownership. He also very much liked the atmosphere at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Having a world class facility is very helpful to us. It makes players feel comfortable that they will be treated in a first class way.

We are all on the same page here now.

We want consistency. We want the team to grow together. We will improve as our young players mature and get better and better; all within a well-articulated system of play.

Pray for good health. And some luck. And great execution. Go Caps!

Developing Young Goaltenders

It takes a long time – no one knows nothing really - but it is good to know that we have ‘optionality’ and we can develop our goaltenders in the right way. It will be exciting to watch how our goaltenders progress but I also have a lot of faith in Theodore and Johnson as a tandem. And my bet is that Brent Johnson will have a great year between the pipes this season.

Pretty Accurate

This is a good blog post. I am not sure what else we could have done. I stand behind every offer and communiqué we made. I also respect the player’s right to NOT accept an offer that he said would get the deal done. Huet was an unrestricted free agent and could test the market. These things can happen.

One thing that is missing in the discussion is that we know who we have to re-sign in two and three and four years time and we also have two young goaltending prospects in the system. Who knows when they will be ready to start playing major minutes for us?

I am hopeful that Jose Theodore plays with enthusiasm as he will be playing for a contender: a young and exciting team in a great cosmopolitan city in front of a great fan base. He seems psyched to be here and he has great talent. He had a great second half of last season and a very good playoff run. I embrace him and am pleased that he is our number one goaltender for next season. Go Caps!

I Usually Agree with OFB…

…But on this one - nope - off the mark by a mile.

We resigned Mike Green, key deliverable #1. We signed a first string goaltender for two years at an affordable price, key deliverable #2. The new goaltender wanted to be here and play here. He knows what we are building. We haven’t lost momentum, just changed a piece part. Our young core is intact and the path for our young goaltending prospects is still intact too. I wouldn’t rush to any judgments if I was you OFB. You know better than that.
